Chitroen AX Gti - thoughts?

There's a tidy looking AX Gti on the bay at the moment. It has been at least a month since I last did smthing irresponsible with car ownership - for some time now I have been considering buying a replacement for the 205 GTi...

anyone driven one of these before, I have driven an AX many times but not a GTi...

Fugging brilliant little cars. I've never driven a GTi, but I had a go in a GT once and it was a proper hoot. Just don't crash it...

I missed out on a very rare survivor last year a Visa GTI - in beige as well!!! surely the shite-ists hot hatch of choice would be a beige Citroen Visa Gti - stupidly fast AND with the BEST DASH EVA :D

Wouldn't want to crash one......

Wouldn't want to BE in one. They are an absolute hoot by all accounts, but I just don't fit in AXs. The cramped footwell is just horrific.

Only car I ever bought new was an AX. The GTi is a proper laugh and good on fuel. Not even that bad on the motorway.

brilliant cars, I've had 2 and would recommend them very highly. GTi will be a mk.2 with the much nicer dashboard and maybe ABS. Beware knackered driveshafts and rust on the inner wings & rear arches

Go for it. I have had a fair few ax's in the past including a GT5 and would happily have another. Other than rust check the rear axle / suspension for bending / seizure.

They are very good little cars, handle well go like the clappers whats not to like. i loved mine although driveing it was a bit of a nightmare with size 11 shoes. if you have smaller feet than me go for it you wont regret it

my old one is sitting in a shed unused after the new owner turned it into an autocross car, he then won class two and in the following year added twin forties and won class three against 1600cc 16v cars

I had no trouble at all fitting in an AX, have size 11 feet and used to drive a 1.0 one to Glasgow and back pretty regularly.

I'm not the most sylph-like of people.

I can't drive Mk1 Primeras for more than half an hour without cursing the lack of legroom, and AX pedals are very close but I never found the AX to be particularly poky inside. Bit short of shoulder room with two up but fine. It's a small car.

Was yours pre- or post-facelift Pete? My Pre-facelift one has loads to room (except between the pedals) but I think the later dash used a lot of that room.

N reg, post facelift.

Ignore me then, that theory didn't work.

The big change was the mk.1 (frankly horrible square dash) to the much more modern mk.2 one in 1992

I quite like the early dash

Aren;t these some silly insurance group? IIRC no AXs had power steering either, all well and good on the open road but a bit tiresome around town.

No power steering? They don't need it. I had 2 diesels new (I bought one, direct bought line the other...) and an early GT that I believe is in EVO darling Chris Harris hands now. GTIs get 4 bolt hubs too.

Just don't stuff one, trust me, I did that once and its still haunting me.
