[Topic nazis look away!] Router recommendations?

Recommended Posts

My ISP (Plusnet) think that my router (ancient BT homehub) is FUBARred and produces noise on the line which results in an inoperative phone (I have unlimited landline calls from my mobile so I couldn't care less) and a glacial upload speed (which annoys me no end)- download seems alright at 5.something on a line rated at 8. They are under the impression that a new router will sort it...I have no problem buying one, but there seems to be a massive array of options on ebay and the internetz in general, and, in addition to my current issues, I seem to remember having read (probably on the TightarsedExpert forums) people experiencing all manner of problems with shitty routers.

Does anyone have anything to recommend? I'd obviously rather spend as little as I can get away with, but I'm prepared to go up to 50ish quid for something that really is dependable.

Thanks in advance...have some quality italian Shite for your troubles!

Stupid question. Have you unplugged the router from the line/filter and, leaving the phone plugged into the filter, tried your phone line? If the hub is taken off the line and the noise is still there then the hub is ok. Its rare for the hub to induce noise onto the line, usually, not always, if its a "white noise" the filters are fooked.

The noise disappears from the phone once the hub is taken off. The filter is only a few months old.

Other than this, have you tried another filter? It being new is no guarantee of it not being shit.

Also, did plusnet not provide you with a router?

I have a plusnet router going begging now I have moved over to sky, you are welcome to it for the cost of the p&p?

The router had been supplied by BT who were the previous ISP. I'm on a rolling contract with plusnet, hence no equipment!

Akron, I will take you up on that! Cheers! PM coming your way.

Fair enough. I'd definitely give another filter a go if you can get your hands on one. I guess you'll know it's the filter if the new router has the same noise issue, but it seems a bit arse-about-face!

Good point, tone. I guess I 'll also order a new filter so that it gets sorted one way or another. Thanks everyone!

With all due respect have you actually tried doing what freebird has suggested?

I think so:

If the hub is taken off the line and the noise is still there then the hub is ok.

Correct. I think that it most likely has got something to do with the hub, although a dodgy filter wouldn't surprise me either...

Smaller socket...Sounds like a plan.

But there is no noise with the filter plugged into the phoneline and the hub disconnected?

No noise. Crystal clear sound.

Cracking thread, keep up the good work.

Grazie mille.

As far as I'm aware BT hubs are only supposed to be used with BT broadband packages. You should definately try a different router/filter combo first.

Also the symptoms sound like a filter being used backwards, with the phone connected to the router socket and the router connected to the phone socket. Maybe the labels are on the wrong way, or maybe you've incorrectly identified the "phone" icon as a computer and the "computer" icon as a phone. This can be confusing for the easily confused. Don't forget you need to put filters on all the slave sockets, too, unless you have a proper BT ADSL master socket. Seek medical advice if symptoms persist.

Have you not got a mate nearby that has a router that you can borrow for a test?

If not - I'm sure you can pick up a used BT HomeHub2 for peanuts on eBay.
