M5 crash

I have nothing to contribute but am impressed with some of the theories on here.

I'm surprised that the Police are bothering to investigate it themselves,

surely it would be more cost efficient to post a load of pictures on AS & let us sort it all out for them.

The police often cannot sort things out with a comprehensive list of facts and witness statements - you'd probably get better results from AS (being quite objective).

BTW, I never tried to make any generalisations regarding crash barriers. I just said that IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE it looks like it may have hindered more than helped.

Reading comprehension FTW.

I completely agree with you on both points - median barriers should always be used when the opposing carriageways are in close proximity.

Oh come on, people speculate on everything thats in the news, politics, the weather, car crashes, x factor...etc

This is a car forum, it's hardly a surprise to see speculation on a motorway accident is it?

And I haven't had any theory on the CAUSE of the accident or who was at fault, just that the lorries crashing into the back of each other/other cars has more than likely caused a lot of the deaths.

Well said. If it was a truly unreadable thread it wouldn't have had eleven pages of posts, would it? It's got car content (albeit tenuous) and has been an interesting debate that I can see.

I assume your tongue is firmly in your cheek there.......My experience of collision investigators and recon officers leaves me in complete awe of what they can discover from these god awful scenes.

No I'm being deadly serious - can't speak for the collision investigators - just the general police from personal experience and comments from friends and acquaintances who have had issues they wanted resolved with police assistance but in most cases the police were of no use.

Agreed.....I have seen police accident investigations a few times.

One in particular they didn't let the facts or common sense get in the way of a good prosecution

I know everyone can be to blame but the stupidest thing I have even been on the receiving end of is one of those hugely tall Royal Mail lorries attempting to swerve into me to get me to move!

To be honest if he had stopped, which he wouldn't, I fully admit severe physical abuse would have ensued.

I have done many 1000 miles towing a trailer over the years.

This particular night I was towing a Skyline on a proper twin wheel trailer, properly lit - all corners and amid ships.

Freshly painted car on trailer so my car's back lights were lighting the Skyline a treat.

Passing a long line of artics and Mr Royal Mail decides he can do 0000.7mph quicker.

So he indicates.

I'm in middle lane with trailer doing 60. Can't go further across as towing. Put foot down to speed up a smidgebut it's uphill.

(To re-iterate my trailer has four white/red lights up either side, the car on the trailer is reflecting my back lights)

Mr RM then swings the entire lorry out towards me..twice...I shit you not.

I would take less offence at someone waving a AK47 in my face, least you have a chance to kick him in the nuts if he messes up but a massive artic as a weapon.

What a cnut.

Could he not see the four marker lights? or the car reflected my back lights???

Or was he just trying to force me into the path of cars barrelling down the outside?

I used to be a bailliff and have had a gun put under my hooter, had all sorts of outrageous threats but ho hum, such is life but some cnut using an artic as a weapon had me wanting blood.

Oh and evening of Friday last, KY60 BNK, one of them big tippers, using the anti clockwise Clackett Lane services slip road* as a short cut....didn't back off or brake, I was doing 50 in traffic and he peeled off and got in front by a country mile!

This was after undertaking in the nearside for a good half mile...then came out the other side and was lane jumping like it was a Ford Fiesta.

*Where the slip road is for the services you can go straight on between the services & the motorway and then rejoin the motorway with no need to slow down but you can jump all the traffic. Bit of a design flaw that :?

Plod were like "can't prove a thing"....err CCTV on garage? CTTV on car park? A quiet word in the drivers shell like if nothing else?

Yes yes people drive cars and vans like bellends all the time but these things are more than 10x heavier and carry a scary inertial and potential energy.

a while back I was in the left lane of a motorway, which was a lane that was leaving that motorway, with lane 2 and 3 carrying on.

I was just following the car in front as we were both leaving the motorway

an artic came up faster in lane 2 along side me and then just started coming over into my lane forcing me to do an emergency stop or be crushed, because he also wanted the exit lane

clear bright day and as he came up behind me no way he could have not seen

that made me the most angry I think I've ever been

Did anyone watch that Police Stop Action Camera thing on BBC1 tonight? Irish truck driver pulled over, coppers thought there was something fishy and transpired he only had a provisional licence. Provisional car licence that is.

I missed all this due to being out of the country but did see a crash in the Czech Republic (I think) it was showing on the news

- someone (dead) with feet clearly sticking out from under a tarp they'd been covered with where they'd been killed by another vehicle while at the side of the road after breaking down.

Not the best for the family involved but made you think rather than the watered down reporting here.

I've seen that episode before, wasn't there also a driver that was well over the limit and had a pack of lagers on the passenger seat with a few tins missing and the empties rolling around on the floor?

I saw a documentary where someone bought a Polish HGV licence for 300 Euros at the docks in Poland. Frightening.

Cause of the accident? Weekend drivers. No lights/bulbs blown, steamed up, filthy screns/windows/headlamps, cheap tyres/no air pressure, a complete lack of using the mirrors/refuse to keep left, brake test for a matrix sign that says "Don't drive tired" etc.

My outside bet would be a builders wagon/traffic womble/anything with Chevrons on. The general public who (often as not are not speeding) feel that if it has chevrons on it OMG IT MUST BE POLIS CAR and go for a full emergency stop. So if half way along the M5 Bob in his Berlingo with an orange light bar is spotted by Bob in his Octavia VRS (sorry Skoda drivers your the worse) who slams the brakes from 72 MPH to 50 MPH, then (dispite being in lane 3 for the last 11 miles) veers left infront what ever poor bugger was allready in that lane (Bob in his 40 Tonner), and there you have it 7 dead. Which call me a bastard is actually a very low death toll.

so it was Bob then?

lets get the b'stard :D
