The draft of the new 2012 MoT manual is now available to download here - it's a lot more detailed and user friendly than the old version and contains a lot of useful stuff.

Unfortunatly, it's a 208 page pdf document with no hyperlinks.....

Thanks. I'll have a browse through at some point. Couple of quick queries - steering locks. Is it now the case that anything post-1971 MUST have one? I removed the one on my 2CV as it's a pain in the arse. Similarly, do I need a main beam warning light? The 2CV never had one on the British market. That one's less of a pain as I do have a lamp for it somewhere, I just never re-fitted it after fitting relays as I ran out of wire...

According to the new manual, post 2001 for steering lock function testing. There is even advice on how to get a keyless renault to actually engage it's lock!

and no. Indicators, hazards and foglamp require a tell-tale warning lamp. High beam does not.

downloaded :D

there will be a short test tomorrow, you may bring along your lucky gonk, but no calculators or slide rules

Thanks SOC! That's good news then.

Is there an exclusion for Smarts on the steering lock test? They have a gear-lock instead.

It isn't going to help me, I'm nearly twice the scheme average for first test fails.

Interesting, I was under the impression that the 2012 manual would contain a section on the tampering / removal of diesel particulate systems but I can not find anything mentioning this.

Really; does the new manual state that a tell-tale warning light is required for indicators?

It was always the case that a warning light OR audible device was required.

(2cv's don't have an indicator tell-tale either; my 2cv4 didn't have *any* warning lights...

No, just my vague wording... Indicators need audible or visible warning, unless you can see them operating from the driver's seat.

Yup. Some 2CVs have struggled as the indicator relay isn't always that audible. I've retro-fitted the flasher to mine, seeing as all the wiring is there anyway!

Without reading it, I have been told by the tests I know it will lead to a big increase in the number of modern cars failing due to warning lights. Hopefully those fucking ebay HID 100000k kits have been made illegal as well?

Posted

afraid not, actually - there is a section dealing with HID lighting, but it says self levelling and cleaning systems to be tested only if fitted and give advice on handling (high voltage) - so it all comes down to does it have a good beam pattern and aim (no change).

Having said that, I haven't passed a home done HID yet - they all have totally incorrect pattern and usually crap aim too.

SOC, what's likely to be the situation with a car presented for test that has had an airbag wheel and bag assembly retrofitted, but isn't wired up, no actuators etc?

[edit: actually just re-read the manual. It refers to "fitted as original equipment"

I'm sure they aren't due a test yet but what of the hydraulic handbrakes on, is it the Audi A1, little thing?

Posted

It's pretty clear on hydraulic handbrakes - "Not acceptable on vehicles first used on or after 1st January 1968" there must be a secondary brake maintained by direct mechanical action.

EPB systems must include a mechanical section, even if it is electronically actuated, I would suspect (but don't know for sure) that the audi has a compliant emergency brake system hidden somewhere in addition to the hydraulic handbrake.

PS, dollywobbler - smarts have a gearlock, yes. The manual allows for other forms of physical immobilizer, it's usually a steering lock.

Thanks for the answer Scary, be interesting if they don't comply.

Hey, your Scariness, here's a one. Does the MOT computer tell the tester what had a windbag fitted at the factory?

Hypothetical situation: I buy an old Saab 9000 with a drivers airbag and a a faulty light. If I whip the airbag wheel off and take the SRS bulb out, and jam a pre-airbag wheel on there instead, who's to know?

Like I say, hypothetical. I don't know if the splines match etc etc in this scenario, it's for the sake of argument only.

Airbag lights are not an mot item..... or, at least they weren't.

Posted

They are soon to be, hence the question.

Posted

No, the computer doesn't currently inform if airbags are fitted, but assuming it will be like the ABS information and test method all you will get is that it MAY be fitted and give a description of the light self-test sequence.

So, on your hypothetical saab I'd say yes, it will still pass next year if you remove all evidence of the airbag system. Don't forget the pre-tensioners under the seat.

SOC perhaps you can clear this new one up under 6.2

- Check that the drivers seat position can be adjusted forwards and backwards and secured in the selected positions.

How does this relate to fixed seats on a kit car or, as a concern to me, a side mounted bucket seat? Could the term 'can be adjusted' stretch to unbolting the side mounts and relocating forward in the next row of holes?

Posted

Look at the "information" column for 6.2 - it says

Information

Original Design characteristics and specialised

modifications (e.g. to enable wheelchair access) are

to be accepted.

So, if it was not designed to be adjustable it does not need to adjust.

Quick update on this - there has been a special notice issued regarding the new manual and the changes to testing, pdf is here

It summarizes all the changes, and also informs that new items will be advise only until the end of march as a "bedding in" period.

Cheers Scary, the blue tint lamps, and tyre pressure monitor ones will cause some grumbling I guess?
