Cheap tyres

Recommended Posts

The front tyres on teh Saab need replacing. However, I am totally skint and am considering getting the cheapest tyres I can find. Are there any "budget" tyres that are any good and/or any to be definitely avoided?

Thanks.

There are many ditchfinder tyres on the market, but a Kumho is a very good tyre ( new VW's have been fitted as standard ),which comes at a almost budget price. The trouble with cheap tyres are they either are so hard, they dont grip,or they are so soft, they scrub out in half the time.Of the cheaper tyres i know worth considering,i think Kumho,Nexen,Hankook,Autogrip are fairly reasonable, although some slate Enduro Runway's,i have a friend who swears by them, and put them on his sisters Saab 9-3 2.0T.

I think the tyres from Russia are the worst for grip

Other option is get some decent part worns, and save up for some decent boots like a Goodyear,or a Avon

The four little footprints that your car tyres make are what keeps you on the road. If you drive your Saab like it should be driven you need decent tyres. I would therefore suggest you look for some secondhand pirellis or similar that are a) not too old B) have not come off a crashed car c) are cheaper than new ditchfinders

I've used Nankang NS2s on all of my cars since 2004 odd. They're brilliant.

Nexen as a brand are fair to reasonable, but their best recent offering is the N8000. Looks like it will be shite in snow though. Asymmetric rather than directional tread pattern. For driectional tread, the N6000 will meet your requirements.

SING IT!

They are "proper bo" and come in all kinds of stupid sizes. 165/35/17 for example. What the fup runs that? But in normal "sporty ish" sizes they are about £35 a corner (They seem to be limted to about 55 profiles and less)

I've ran them on all sorts of vehicles, abused them in all sorts of ways and they have been nothing but impressive.

Have a look for your tyre size on evilbay. With a bit of patience, you should be able to score a decent brand matched pair with lots of life left for about the price of one new budget tyre. I bought four hardly used Firestones for the price of a single brand new Hankook (yes, Hankooks are brilliant, but not at 4x the price!).

I tried Uniroyal Rainexpert tyres on the BX after they were recommended to me, and found they did a good job.

EDIT: Uniroyal are owned by Michelin.

Anyone mentioned Viking yet? Were decent budget tyres back in the late nineties when I remember my father fitting a set to his Sierra and couldn't praise them enough. Not really looked at the prices of them in recent years though, so I may be out of date.

Indeed, I've heard a lot of decent things about Kumho in recent years too. Never personally tried them though.

Hankooks are bloody brilliant in my experience.

Seconded. I've had a set of those in the past. and would happily have another set.

Kuhmo's lasted 8,000 miles on the 944, so I didn't have a good experience with them.

I have Hankook Ice Bears on the Scirocco (just put them back on for the winter) and they were spectacular.

Stand on the brake in the snow & the car stopped.

I have 8 ply Firestones on the van, it handles like the proverbial supertanker on a village pond.

Update - Hankook tyres are about a million times better than the Barum Brilliantis

(allegedly a Continental spin off company) in the damp conditions this morning.
