I think the law states that if you have a car and you want to use it on the road it must have road tax.

A while ago i was driving a car home from a sellers house. I was stopped and quizzed by the police, he warned me that i was breaking the law driving without tax. I was let off but it was a few years ago and he was a friendly copper.

Assuming you're part-exchanging at a dealers I suppose you could always tax it then cash it back in? They (DVLA) will only send the refund back to the registered keeper which would be you anyhow.

Failing that perhaps ask the other party if they'll refund the RFL upon the deal being completed?

You would lose a month's worth of rent for one journey, plus an extra 10% if you only bought six months.

If the p/x deal is done, you could ask the trader to collect it. (And deliver the new car while they're at it!)

Or borrow some trade plates.

In a similar vein, I'm planning to Sorn the T2 at the end of this month.

Is it still as easy as walk up to the post office with the tax disc & hand it in with a form?

& in March/April do I walk back with the V5, the MOT, Insurance & money?

& can I drive it to MOT & back in February?

Sorry to crash your thread.

Yes, or do it online and you fill in an online form which prints out with all your details filled in, you put it in the post and a few weeks later you get a cheque for the remaining tax.

Yes, or again just do it online and your tax disc arrives in the post a few days later. Depends if you're ok leaving the car outside without displaying a tax disc.

& can I drive it to MOT & back in February?

Not 100% clear about this and I've never seen actual evidence that you can, but I normally do.

You can drive a SORN declared car to a pre arranged MoT, but if you aren't planning on taxing it until the end of april why not wait and MoT it then?

Many thanks, I've checked my dates & the MOT doesn't expire until 18th April.

Therefore, I will be able to pop up to the post office, tax the van on the 1st of April & then nip down & MOT it all legally.

Presumably just holding a V5, insurance, the old MOT & a handful of crisp twenties.
