Good little design features

^ That reminds me. When I was getting the additional airbag "tuned in" to the Rover, the bloke with the Testbook showed me an option called "Police Mode". Apparently it changes the EMS map to give better low-end grunt. Sadly, it doesn't sound the two horns alternately, or flash the headlights.

Mk3 Granadas allowed you to use the electric windows when you had switched the car off until you opened the drivers door. Which was great if lil Jonny had left the window down in the back.

On later Golfs with rain sensitive wipers, you can screw around with VAGCOM and have it automatically close the windows if it starts raining while the car's unattended.

Excellent. Citroen did half a job with the C5 then...

When you were driving along in it, if the rain sensor sensed rain, it obviously turned the wipers on, but also shut the sunroof and windows. I loved that feature, don't think it was active when the car was off though...

Thye did with mine. It was like a random electrical thing generator. Sometimes a few drops of rain would be just enough to stop the dashboard working, but not enough to make the wipers come on. It was only just out of warranty.

They are supposed to...

another thing on mine that never worked. Annoyingly as I often leave the windows open only to return to a car full of water. Keeps it clean I suppose :(

How long is it active for after the car is turned off? Surely powering the rain sensor would soon drain the battery...

Same with my Montego. Only found this out today after a year of going "oh bugger I've left the window open" and putting the ignition key back in.

The Heep and Rangie both have memory seats / mirrors etc that can be assigned to individual keys. I love that feature. On the Rangie it does all weird stuff as well, dash light intensity and stuff. Plip "unlock" and the car goes to just how I like it.

It's fun if someone asks to borrow the Jeep. I'll program the 2nd fob to a nightmare "right up to the wheel" position, send the mirrors haywire, adjust the lumbar support to "Full" and the seat tilt so the seat cushion is right up at the front and drive the car to 'em with the 1st key - which is my one.

Get 'em in the Jeep, show 'em all the controls and stuff and the immobiliser kicks in after 30 seconds or so. Tell 'em they have to click "unlock" to disable it - which is true - then close the drivers door on 'em and wait for the scream.

Low coolant level warning light on both generations of Scorpio (Granada mk3 and frogeye). Such a cheap, straightforward thing the lack of which can cost you an engine.

Five pages... have we had Ford heated windscreens yet? Surely the most excellent bit of engineering of ever.

My Cavalier SRi's electric windows go up when you deadlock the doors, rather handy as I'm a tool and often forget to do it. Don't think the 1.8i does it though. I also like the cassette storage between the seats in the SRi.

The headlights on my Proton are also the best I've ever known on any car ever. They're just bloody awesome. I also have a strange liking for right hand indicator stalks as they're just more useful in everything except, I think, Leyland Nationals. Largely because the gear selector, wiper and door controls are on that side too.

Dont know if they still do it, but I do like the way VW headlights have a little VW badge inside. Or cars with a flat dashboar top, such as the Bluebird or AX

Cars with a flat dashboard rock mightily - where else are you and your passenger going to put your fish'n'chips while you try to unwrap them?
