C'mon, put me off calling about this

I have a feeling this is SWMBO's old Wyvern with a different plate on it. She had it for a few years in the 90s - so it's a run-off Wyvern with Cresta chrome work, built Feb or March 57, needs some work still - and if I remember correctly, that front wing was dodgy even in 1990.

Is there anyone in Glasgow fancying a look over it for me and taking some good digital photos.

Looks good enough to MoT! ;)

Nobody's put you off. Looks like you've got to do the decent thing and call about it, then buy it no matter what the owner says about the gearbox being missing, there's no floor....

nah, it has to be at the right price - and I know of a decent 65,000 mile E Series Cresta with the engine in bits not thirty miles from there that would come for about the same money.

It still looks rough, despite the owner saying he has spent £1800 on it and done all the welding and seam sealing.

It doesn't look very enticing does it? Seems to be an awful lot of filler in that front wing. Taking on someone else's project can be a real nightmare. I'd opt for the Cresta - closer to home and much sweeter six-pot engine. The little four-pot does struggle a bit with these enormous barges.

They are the correct tail-lights. Not a successful facelift IMHO!

I know taking on another project can be a nightmare - thankfully I have experience of Es and PAs, when Janette had the car, that front wing was more filler than metal - still looks to be like that.

The other car is 30 miles from this one, not from home (in Gloucester) - engine is out and it has been gathering dust for fifteen years of so - I would need to sweet talk the owner into selling, but I haven't ever pushed him as I hadn't space for a 'barge'.

Ah, sorry. Mis-read it. Personally, I think I'd let it go. Unless you've got the space and enthusiasm to crack on with it, could just a very large and 'in the way' project that might happen. I've bought enough duff projects in my time!

I've the space - probably the enthusiasm, but without a new wing, that driver's side will always look cack.

Have e-mailed the chap with the Cresta - as I know it is a better proposition. I doubt the Wyvern will sell between now and when I am in Scotland in five weeks time, so will try look at both.

The main thing is, I wouldn't care too much about perfect, but there has to be a good base to start from. I have two concours de grotte awards already.

The whole side of that looks it's laden with pog and there are patches of rust killer painted round holes in the bodywork down the side and all round the back. Looks like someone who doesn't know what they're doing has done that sort of work. I'd be really wary.

Edit: it looks even worse in the other ad, even in those old pictures of it. I'd go against what your heart is saying and walk away, personally.

That looks really, really rough. It will be a rotten, bodged nightmare, and I imagine body panels are fashioned out of purest unobtanium.

Can you remember exactly when you owned the car? I ask because the reg KSK must have been issued very early in the '90's, maybe even late '80's. My Cambridge is VSK, and that was issued in January 1992.

Do it anyway.

Yeah, I'll go along with that 8)

I think the question you have to ask yourself is, did you love the car when you had it last? If so, grab it; if not, save your money.

That would be a great save if you did do it up, but with £300 odd quid just to transport it back to your gaff, it would have to be cheap to make it worthwhile.

no answer from my PMs on RR. Car is rougher than a badger's arse, despite my wife once owning it, I think I'm inclined to leave it.

Personally my limit was a three figure sum for it - on the assumption that it could be broken for about a grand if it was worse than it looked. What I do know is that it doesn't look like it has been welded, it's rusty and it requires a full resto - which will run to thousands, just for the welding and paintjob.

Mechanically, Janette says it used to blow HGs, which, while easy to replace, may lead to more severe engine issues.

It would also mean selling my BX and not getting a Vespa, so it looks like I may be out.

To answer the question, she owned it till about 1991, having patched it up to get it back on the road, then used it for about three years.

Yet to hear back on the Cresta, but that may require a visit and chat with the owner's mum.
