Peugeot 205 Diesel shite for sale

I'm 6' 6" and have a bad knee, which seems to be in part caused by doing 1500 miles a month shoe-horned into a small car, so next weekend I'm upgrading to a Merc 190D. As a result, my 1991 205 GRD (5 door) is now surplas to requirements.

127000 miles, recentish timing belt and water pump and almost new Unipart battery. Very reliable and highly economical; I just don't fit in it! January 2012 test.

The bad, sliding sunroof doesn't open any more, and the gearbox has a noise at high speeds. (Only getting worse slowly though). Clutch has a judder too. Otherwise remarkably good, and rather presentable.

Needs to go quick, how does £195 with no tax or £295 with January tax sound? It's in Liverpool...

Just how bad is the gearbox?

It's not terrible (my father drove it at the weekend and it took him 30 miles to notice it, and if I was a dishonest type I could sell it and the buyer probably wouldn't notice it to start with...) but I think you'd have to buy it knowing that it will nedd another gearbox throwing in eventually. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if it lasted until the test ran out, or even longer, but who knows?

Probably worth mentioning what pump it has, Jonathon. If it's a Bosch one it'll run on veg oil and therefore be an even more attractive proposition than it already is.

Have you tried changing the 'box oil? 'Sealed for life' doesn't always mean 30 years and 2 million miles!

Posted

Cav, pump is Lucas/CAV so no good for veg alas.

Luxobarges, new oil will not fix the gearbox however a new input shaft bearing probably will; maybe a nice little job to move onto having mastered changing wheels and now batteries?

And involving a 23 page story of it

Sounds easy enough.

But checking the gearbox oil level certainly is a good idea

Flush the gearbox oil, and put synthetic it. It will make a difference and you won't hear the noise anymore.

To remove all doubt, I have changed the gearbox oil, both in February just gone and a couple of years ago when I replaced the clutch. No signs of any leakage.

A new owner may like to try flushing/synthetic oil etc. but PSA BE3 gearboxes tend to run better with mineral oils, and in my opinion the only long term cure would be replacing the input shaft bearing, or replacing the box.

Have you checked that you fit in a 190?

Drove one yesterday and despite the rather low steering wheel found it to be a good fit. Not much space behind me for a backstreet driver though

The steering wheel really bothered me, but I do have FAT KNEES.

Any chance of some more pics please?

Tempting, how quick do you need it gone?

Couple of weeks mebbe, but will have to research tax situation; I may have to cash it in at the weekend when I transfer the insurance...

Sorry, typical timewaster response I'm afraid :(

My wife (who is pretty cool, as owning 20 cars shows) has put her foot down.

that looks incredible value

I did a few gearboxes when I ran 305 diesels and they're not hard to remove or even to dismantle, unless there's something different about 205s

then I did a mate's BX thinking it would be the same. The hydraulic pipes made it quite a bit harder

No worries Craig!

DNJ, you're right it's not a bad job at all; I've already had the gearbox out a couple of years ago to do the clutch and it was no bother. If I had the time and space I'd fix it before sale, but sadly I don't. It's far too good to go over the bridge just yet though; I'll put it on ebay tomorrow and hopefully it will find a good home...

Bloody hell, nice quick sale there!

Quick certainly, but he has timewaster written all over him; his only correspondence so far is to ask that he picks it up in a month when he gets paid

Which translates to: 'by that time I'll have found something else because my wages will be burning a hole in my pocket and hopefully you'll have forgotten about me by then'.

*Unless he got confused by those giant sized ink cartridges on the pavement?

He's an enormous rissole and he can fuck off.

We're very lucky to still have our print cartidges; just round the corner most of them got burnt (along with a few cars...)
