Cavcraft Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Good question. Without doubt the 8Vs are as good as bullet proof: they can take huge neglect, no servicing and regular thrashings without batting en eye lid.Have always considered them a very hard act to follow hence the slightly less reliable Ecotec is slightly less favoured. HOWEVER...I wouldn't kick an Eco out of bed, expected them to be shit but having owned/driven a few multi-milers they're actually a nice, punchy reliable engine and I've never had any trouble out of them, especially the 2.0 ones. Achilles Heel seems to be the headgasket if anything but honestly if serviced reasonably well they're fine. The complications of such things as the EGR, IACV and throttle bodies can complicate matters but they're fairly easy to sort out and not too expensive.
scooters Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 I suspect I am just predjudaced - use of the word 'eco' tends to cause my sphincter to clench... I also suspect the late Vectras and Insignias I used to get from the company National account were, more often than not, 1.8 ecotechs usually with a very high spec and the Insigia in particular the 'exclusive' had more buggery bollocks than I have ever seen - the most pointless invention since the self dispensing domestic soap squirter - (what is the fuking point of that????? - I don't give a shit if the soap dispenser is COVERED IN GERMS I AM FUCKIN WASHING MY HANDS ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!) namely the electric handbrake.... it also has the most ridiculous 'remote control' I have ever seen - a centrally mounted (next to the flippin electric handbrake) multi function knob which is a whole 6 inches away from the main multifunction knob....wow...... what is it with flippin multifunction knobs anyway???? come clean - they are a cost saver not a benefit and certainly not a benefit to road safetly - anyway - all this adds up to this particualr car weighing about as much as an XJ40 with an underpowered and gutless engine married to a 6 speed box - YUK - however, the Tdi was a LOT better - decent torque anyway
garbaldy Posted July 26, 2011 Author Posted July 26, 2011 Still available if anyone wants a bit of ruff I have driven the old gall for a good few miles now and i never thought i would say this or even think it, the cav is better to drive than our bmw I put that down to the dire condition of our roads rather than the cars but you never know
Cavcraft Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 *Not the most useful response but if you were near here I'd have that in a shot. Unfortunately the economics of a very lenghty road trip make it unviable sorry. If anyone's after a cheap reliable runner you won't beat this car.
