Post 2001 road tax compications

Hi all,

Been browsing ebay and spotted a niceish LPG powered Omega- OK its not that nice, but it should be cheap. Road tax says £245 for 12 months, but its an authentic Vauxhall Dual-fuel factory-fitted conversion, surely this gives it a reduction in road tax to something more reasonable, or have I dreamt all that? Tax disc simply says petrol car, no mention of it being gas powered at all.

Is there anyone here cleverer than me who knows the tax system?

From memory the LPG only equates to something like £15 off the cost of a 12 month disc, although that may relate to pre-2001 cars.

If it's listed as "Petrol car" then you'd need to apply to the doovla for a change of class to Alternative fueled car (I think), but even then judging by the pre-2001 lpg rebate, it won't make much difference. :(

Edit: Looking at this http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524 it'd save you £10.

I think you can also avoid the congestion charge in London etc - so it's probably well worth pursuing the V5 change?

My understanding of the system is that having LPG mentioned in the V5 (regardless of whether it's factory fitted or aftermarket conversion) gives you an automatic 10% reduction on the cost of road tax. However, I am not totally sure it applies to post-01 factory-fit cars, as they will have probably been rated on OMG CABRON EMISHONZ.

One way or another, it is a negligible amount that shouldn't make-or-break a deal.

how many g/km did they rate it at?

Ive seen cars of the same year/model/cc be rated a kg or two over the point where it hits the higher tax rate

Ive also got a customer that drives a 2004 1.6 focus which is £245 per year to tax, its an automatic, a manual car of the same year/model/cc is £165

L_r_U - it's not 10%, it works out to about £10-£15 off the full price. You only get the congestion charge discount / waiver in London if the car is on the Powershift register, which hasn't been updated for YEARS.

[EDIT - Powershift is no longer applicable. You only get a discount for cars that emit <100gm/km these days, for new applications.]

To change the registration to dual fuel, you need to take the V5 and either the conversion cert or an engineers report to your local DOOVLA office. I sent all mine off to Swansea, and they sent it all back again. BASTARTS CYMRAEG , etc.

The seller says the car is registered in Northern Ireland, although it has normal U.K plates, this could be the reason the tax disc doesn't mention duel-fuel. The car sounds like more trouble than its worth, especially as its in the newer tax categories which could have rapid price hikes at any time, plus its a bit of a dog. The days of cheap old bangers are gone!

I think the tax breaks are for post 2001 cars. I'm pretty sure my Audi wouldn't benefit anyway with it being a 1986 model!
