Series Land Rovers

My Ami is for sale, or at least it will be soon. I want to replace it with a Series Landy, preferably a 2 or 2A and preferably tax free. Oh, and preferably not covered in chequerplate and "ONE LIFE - LIVE IT" stickers, and certainly not with white 8 spoke wheels. I'd rather have the original 2.5 diesel or 2.25 petrol engine (either will do). Ideally it'd have a full canvas tilt, and battered paintwork is fine, in fact I prefer my Landys to look a bit shit. Oh, and it must cost less than about 2 grand. Anyone know of anything suitable?

2 or 2a will be a 2 litre OHV Diesel or a 2.25 OHV Diesel. 2 litre until September 1961, 2286 until it gained a pair of main bearing in about 1980, then used until 1984/5 into the first year of coilers. The 2.5 was a coiler fit only, often fitted as an upgrade. Petrols were a 2 litre IOEV, up till around the 1959 model year (September 1958 ish) then there were 2 different 2286 petrols, the first until Septemberish 1961, then it stayed the same until similar time scales as the diesels. (5 bearing)

Have to admit, I think the Series experience can be boosted no end with a bit of an engine upgrade. The 2.25 diesel really is rather feeble, even compared to 0.6 litres of Citroen. I'd stay away from Ebay. Like 2CV values, Landy ones are not entirely realistic on Ebay. There are lots of classified places and forums out there that might provide something of better value, or buy one of the bazillion Landy titles.

Good luck in your search though! Look forward to seeing what you end up with.

Oh and nothing wrong with the diesels, only knackered ones are really slow.

They are going up in price but you'll get something good in your price range. Fully expect to get your hands dirty on whatever you buy.

I saw that one in Norwich while browsing ebay this morning and thought it looked like a good bet. Sadly, I'll need to get the Ami fettled and sold before I'm in a position to buy anything. Getting my hands dirty is not a problem ... :)

Depends on your definition of slow. I think an Ami would still feel quite nippy by comparison! I quite like the sound of a non-turbo Tdi converted Series.

Sorry fella, didn't mean to imply otherwise! Good luck and I'll keep my eyes open.

DW they are pretty good. A Dutch friend of mine runs one in a S1 and it goes like stink! In something a bit heavier I'd keep the turbo though it isn't difficult.
