DPF removal - thoughts please gents.

The Zafira (1.9 CDTi) has once again thrown in its towell and chucked the DPF out of the pram.

Currently its (under a Warranty Direct warranty) having the whole shebang replaced. However searching of the interweb shows several companies that will (for a fee) remove the DPF with a big hammer and alter the ECU (possibly also with a big hammer) so that it does not throw up fault codes.

Further to that I wonder if its worth having the ECU re-mapped completely.

Has anyone had experience of this?

Why dont I get rid? Simple - Im still paying for the bugger on a bank loan and I have no spare cash to buy anythging else. Believe me I have spent ages looking at C8's and the like on autotraderBay.

Mate's 407 HDi 136 threw a strop over the DPF. A bloke who works at a Pug dealer did the removal on the QT. Not strictly legal, as it invalidates the taxation class in some cases.

Just be aware that it might be an MOT failure sometime in the future.

That 'OMG NEW 2012 MOT' document that spread across car forums faster than H5N1 says

8.2.2. Diesel engine emissions

8.2.2.1. Exhaust emission control equipment

Reasons for failure: Emission control equipment fitted by the manufacturer absent or obviously defective

Arsecheese. :(

Anyone want to purchase a low milage diesel 7 seat MPV?

No?

Anyone got some 4* and a match?

I don't think that's true. Taxation is based on CO2 emissions and the DPF actually increases CO2 emissions, so by removing it you have a car that produces less emissions that what you are paying tax for.

Also the tax relates to the emissions as the car was sold. Once it is sold there is no way to change the tax band but it's not illegal to modify a car provided that it passes an MOT.

However modification might invalidate your insurance.

Anyway, I removed the DPF on my 607 2.2 diesel auto last year. The economy went from about 29mpg to maybe 33mpg. This weekend I blanked off the EGR and my economy is now sat at 37mpg but it's too early to say if it will stay that high. I hope it doesn't throw up a warning light but if so it's a five minute job to remove the block (a piece of sardine tin). If I can get a consistant 37mpg from such a large automatic car driven in London I'll be chuffed to bits.

So a DPF present but with it's guts removed, and no error light because the ECU has been modified would still pass.

DPF's are the work of Satan. Dealers over here [Jersey] have been told by various manufacturers not to sell them, because local driving never generates enough heat to make them work properly. Anyone who does all his mileage in town is in for a nasty shock........
