Sealant to hold boot light in position

Can anyone recommend a decent sealant, in black if possible that will hold a small light in place.

My mx5 has 2 small plastic lights that act as numberplate lights and also come on when the boot is opened, when my car was rustproofed, they must have removed these to inject wax behind them. I am told there is a clip that holds them in position, and this will have been broken, although i don't want to take the other one out in case i break that!!

There is a rubber seal around the light and i thought as this touches the metal on the boot, i could put some sealant over it to hold it in place, the lights are about 30 quid each, worth a couple of quid in the real world :) and hard to obtain new or 2nd hand as they only fit one model type. The light also works as normal so it seems a waste of money to replace it as they are so delicate anyway, and hidden until the boot is opened.

Thought about silicone sealant or even decorators caulk, any other ideas, thanks Doug

PU-40 polyurethane (sikaflex) is what I use for this sort of job. Should be about a fiver for a mastic gun sized tube from any builder's merchant.

You could try Kirkmans, they're friendly MX5 breakers,

I'm guessing if you've spent a bit of money on rustproofing, a couple of quid for the proper clips won't go amiss.

They're just up the road from me but I know they post stuff out.

Thanks for that ,though i have now bought sealant, i do not think you can buy the clips anyway an "EXPERT" on the owners club site, tells me they are part of the light. Thanks for the info though they may be useful in the future, mx5 parts sell nearly everything for all mx5 models, cheaper than the dealers, but even they have no light units in stock and all their stuff is new too.i think the sealer will work fine , stick it , and keep water out, Doug.

Another poster on mx5 owners club, says his 2.5 does not have a clip/spring, broken or otherwise, says it slides in!i can't figure that out as mine won't.Anyway now i have applied the sealant, the worse that can happen, is i need to change the bulb and break the light, leaving me in the same position anyway!! Sikkaflex is epic stuff, although a right messy sod if it gets anywhere but where you intend to go...........
