Turns out it was J Arthur Rank - he bought out/up Hovis and McDougal in the 1950s (becoming RHM) who then made 'Mother's Pride'. In 1960 RHM bought out Gilchrist but took ages to sort out the branding. By 1965 they'd kind of got all the deliveries into Mother's Pride livery but folks in Ayr still went to the old Gilchrist's Tea Rooms (first floor above the actual bakery) for High Tea. That bit I recall being just a youngster.
Tea Rooms are now Tescos (and have been for some years) fake Tea Rooms someplace else in town for the tourists.
