pbottomley Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 Noticed the other day the old shitter Escort TD is making smoke like a WW2 battleship when starting.... As i just drive the old bus and have no idea what to do with it other than fill it with fluids as required I have no idea whats wrong with it.... anyone got any ideas as to a simple for me to check and get fixed suce.... 140k on the clock... 96 hp version if that helps?
Cavcraft Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 Sounds like unburnt fuel. Have you checked coolant levels recently though just in case? Might be worth replacing fuel filter and 'o' ring too.
dollywobbler Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 If it's only doing it when cold, could be duff glow plugs. Does it misfire as well? The BX isn't starting all that well (though better since I replaced the 'new' starter motor with a good second hand one!) and despite new glow plugs, I have to give them two bursts if I'm going to avoid an embarassing cloud of smoke at start-up when it's sub-zero. They were a pig to change as well! (probably easier on an Escort TD as the engine wasn't designed by French Masochists).

Guest Leonard Hatred Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 I think it's based on the XUD principle of "dieselising" a petrol engine, that's all. The Ford diesel is utter shit.
retrogeezer Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 new glow plugs made a huge difference to the smoke coming from the diesel escort I had.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 If it starts OK and is alright when its warm, I wouldnt stress too much. A massive thick smelly black cloud can be part of the fun of owning an old diesel snotter, (if you are sat inside it with the windows shut while its doing it of course)
pbottomley Posted December 19, 2010 Author Posted December 19, 2010 Replaced the glow plugs still the same? its had a new cam belt maybe 10k ago tops.... drives fine once started... but sometimes a real bugger to start especially if i park it nose uphill as well?

Guest Leonard Hatred Posted December 19, 2010 Posted December 19, 2010 Fuel starvation or air in the fuel.
Guest Tony Hayers Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Park it as you normally would facing uphill. Before you cold start it pop the bonnet and give the Fuel filter primer a dam good few pumps until it a) goes rock hard or has pumped fuel up from the tank. The primer is on the right hand side of the head, as you look into the engine* If it starts up quicker (these lumps do need a shit load of cranking) you have an airleak somewhere allowing diesel to run back to the tank. And if air can get in the its a bloody good chance that diesel is getting out. This method will only work if you have a Lucas fuel system fitted to your Escort as the Bosch equipped cars did with out the primer bulb as they were self priming by turning them over.
pbottomley Posted December 20, 2010 Author Posted December 20, 2010 Cheers for that heads up on the primer. i will have a look in the morning and come back with the results, i suspected it was leaking fuel back towards the tank, viva some air leak of other...
woolleyiain Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Feeder Seals? if you park it facing down hill will it be easier to start? Do Fords even have feeder seals? Not much help there, sorry...
