Didn't want to go too sweary on the title so have the censored version.

Golf's failed..... needs both sills welding at the front, possible further back but they won't know till they take the placca covers off to weld it. Also the bung is missing from under the passenger seat, lots of metal missing, needs a patch there. Quoted £200-250 assuming no major further work needed i.e. it's just what they can see.

O/S/R caliper is stuck which I knew about, explains the glowing red brake disk last night! Could be easy, more likely not to be since I know the entire assembly is rusted solid so maybe another couple of hours labour, might need another caliper from a scrapper. Handbrake is also showing bugger all efficiency. I've mentally allowed £150 for all that.

Three tyres, can get partworns for £20 but it's still another £60.

Is a 1992 Mk3 Golf worth spending £400+ on? I'm thinking no. Sadly I can't weld, if anyone in the East Midlands fancies doing a bit of sitting outside in the freezing cold welding onto rust for mate's rate's prices, please do get in touch!

Doesn't sound worth it to be honest. I know someone on here has already expressed an interest in parts so may be more cost effective to break it?

Yeah I'm thinking that. Once you start welding sills it seems to be an annual task, and Mk3s were never really renowned for their resistance to oxidisation.

Shame really, after the effort of putting the gearbox in!

Sad news especially after all the box work , still there comes a time when its just not worth it , if you could do the lot yourself its still a load of work especially in this weather

£250 for the golf sold for parts... take the £400 it would have cost you... add together, purchase the bavarian. Job done.

Despite my utter loathing of the things it might be worth doing it as you'll surely get another year (hopefully two) out of it? Also you know the car well enough so should have a good idea of anything else that needs doing soon or has been done in the recent past.

Its not really worth doing as MKIII Golfs aren't rare and aren't worth anything so the money you spend welding it up could be used to buy another Golf in better condition. If its only an estimate for £200/£250 and they think more rot will be under the plastic covers (which it probably will be) you could end up paying more like £300/£450. VW Golf's suffer badly from rust but abit of searching and you may find a one owner, garaged minter for a couple of hundred quid. I'd scrap it and spend your money on another car with less rust.

It went, cobbler's mate is now the proud (?) owner for as long as it takes to give up the engine, box, and I suppose anything else floggable.

All I've got to remind me is the 8-ball gearknob... *sob*

I just figured it wasn't worth it. I've owned cars like that before and once you get a big bill, every bill is big. The problem with welding is you need metal to weld to, and on a Mk3 you can go all the way to the back wheel looking for it. I knew it was crunchy as I tried to jack it up by the jacking point once. Jack was at full extent, wheel still on the floor, sill FAIL.

Maybe if I could weld, I'd have saved it. But I can't, so SQUISHY SQUISHY. As has been said, it's not like I've just cubed a Tagora, or a Marina Pickup - I could go out tomorrow and buy a dozen more similar cars.
