Petrol in a Diesel

Mornin all

Right, a mate phoned me this morning in a bit of a tizz - his 2005 Tucson CRDi was nearly out of diesel, so off to the service station goes he. He's lobbed about £3 of pez in it before he gets his "OH FUCK!" moment. When he phoned me, I told him to fill it to the neck with diesel. So far it seems OK, and it's got him to work OK (~30 miles). Given that diesel drivers used to put a small amount of pez in their tanks in winter to stop it freezing, I reckon it'll be OK. Anyone know any different? He's shitting himself.

Cheers, Shiters!

My friend's father in law put quite a bit of petrol in his common-fail Focus, it conked out after about 30 miles. I expected disaster but once it was drained and bled it was fine.

I don't think 3 litres mixed with a full tank of diesel will cause a problem.

Plus, diesel being heavier sinks to the bottom so the fuel pickup line will only be sucking diesel though.

Tell him not to run it below half a tank for a few weeks and it'll be ok.

Can't see £3-'orth causing a problem. The handbook for my old LT35 van says that the engine in that (and by extension the engine in Volvo 740/940 TDs) would cope with up to 30% petrol in the diesel - don't know if a common rail engine would be quite that tolerant, but £3 is going to be less than 5% of a full tank so should be fine.

Indeed. Used to shove a bit under a gallon of petrol, some LHM and a splash of veg oil to my old BX dizzler to help the emissions at MOT time.

I put about £4 worth of petrol in my Maestro diesel (in error) about ten years ago.

Realising my mistake I filled the rest of the tank up with diesel. It was a bit out of tune for the next day or so and then returned to normal.

Cheers everyone. I've told hime to keep an eye on the MIL, and to keep topping it up every time it gets near half.

I bet he never does it again!

First time I filled up our focus tdci I bunged about the same amount of petrol in. Filled it up with diesel and 40k miles later I can report it had bugger all effect.

I must admit I was shitting it a bit at the time and the worst thing I could have done is googled the possible damage.
