I'm looking forward to putting winter tyres on the SAAB. I think chains are a bit overkill to be honest, unless you live in the alps.

agree - would prefer winter tyres but they are expensive -

just been running my mum back across town - naughty cos i used the chains on the gritted roads as well - mind you little option as most roads are blocked with a good 6 inches of compacted ice/snow - ideal chain driving conditions though.

You find yourself sticking to the back roads because you don't want to risk breaking a chain on the tarmac -

quite funny though - was bumbling along at 25mph on the clear road with some twat inan X5 up my arse - we both turn off the same hilly. heavily snowed, side road and I keep doing 25 miles an hour whereas Mr Low Profile hairdressers jeep does a 360....couldn't resist doing a U turn across the 3 ft pile in the middle of the road and driving down to offer helpful advice like -

"you really shouldn't have accepted the vehicle with Low Profile alloys - those tyres are useless"

and

"i suggest getting a set of chains - the only problem is that you can't go too quickly on a clear road - oh - but you realise that now"

and

"weren't you tempted by a proper 4x4 - like a defender or a land cruiser or are they a lot more expensive these days - I wouldn't know because I use a volvo estate that cost me £400 including free snow chains!"

and

"the problem with most cars these days is that they are fashion accessories rather than tools - in conditions like these you need the real thing"

and

" HOW much did that cost again?"

by this stage he was a bit upset and declined my offer of further advice/assistance - even offered to tow him out so I pulled another Uey - through the drift he was stuck in and proceeded up the hill at 25 mph

Excellent! That's made me grin. I saw chains being used here last week, but then the snow plough came through and they became redundant rather quickly! Was amazing the difference some grit made. Our first trip to town was abandoned as it was too dangerous but hours later, it was fine (though we saw a wreck or two from people who hadn't abandoned their earlier attempts - made us glad we did!).

How much is a set of snow chains?

Posted

my winter tyres didn't cost anymore than ordinary tyres

also when the car is running the winter tyres the ordinary ones are not being worn out

so I think the long term cost is zero compared with not having them

however you need a spare set of rims and place to store them

I am talking about winter tyres which I leave on for three or four months and which you can use when there isn't snow as well. Not the same thing as mud 'n snow tyres which are a lot more aggressive.

Justy had great fun for the last hour - I put the chains on the Torslanda - afterall it is supposed to be this cold weather wondermachine with no frippery and thus no excess battery draw.

Well, I have been having a few ignition issues with the car - however, nothing like a couple of minus 7 nights - I am assuming the frost has sorted out the remaining problems because -

a - started on the button

b - no lumpy idling

c - no lambda warning light

anyway - first off - chains on and down the road - 10 inches of snow - bottom of murrayfield avenue - a long and steepish hill with parked cars - slush and ice about a foot deep - stranded cars and X5 skidding all over the place - the Torsy withthe chains steamed straight up the hill - on the top the snow was well over a foot but no problem! the chains bit and on we steamed - passing some pedestrials one of whom commented to his mate - "now THAT's what you need in THIS weather" - (he's obviously never driven a 240 in the snow WITHOUT chains)

back down a really steep hill - a bit skiddy at the bottom but once again the chains bit no problem

I'm going to order them for Nicky's 850 -

question - hers is a viscious coupled 4x4 - will this mean 2 sets of chains - I think it might becuase you can get away with it with a twin diff but a viscous diff i think needs all wheels covered - unless you guys can adviose otherwise

I had a blue and rust (mainly rust) 265 GLE - or so it said on the badge. The prv lump had flown to bits and been replaced with a 2.2 and manual box.

It was absolutely wonderful in snow - charged down the outside lane of the A19 at 60 while all the rest of them pootled along at 20 in the inside (clear) lane :)

Crap on the ice though.

Bought in October and the snow arrived in November, much as it is now. Had to dig down through two feet of snow to get under the thing to change the engine mounts, which was fun.

Getting some heat in the car was a nightmare until I discovered that there were flaps operated by three push buttons on the dash - that should have been connected to the (now non-existent) vacuum pump.

Hooked it into the manifold and lots of heat available. After a couple of months of driving with blankets and hot water bottles :(

Great car, even if the kids did lie on the floor in case their mates happened to see them in it.

Speaking of Swedish shite, it started no bother after nearly two weeks under the white stuff. Just need to venture out to fit the winter tyres now.

Did you get a flight up from Gatwick or did you take the train from London to Lavvymore?

We got a flight up in the end, Inverness airport had run out of "de-icer", either for the 'planes or the runway. The runway looked pretty skitey.

Apart from the odd frozen washer jet, both of mine have been great in the snow, especially The Volvo, which I used to commute in at the weekend when the second lot of snow hit my part of the world :)

You've been Volvo'd! :D

I've been a fan of that clip for years and really wish that I could get the full version of it. I do, however, have "I Am Rolling", the album commemorating Volvo's 60th anniversary that the two songs featured in it ("I Am Rolling" and "Some People Get All The Breaks", respectively) are taken from :)
