Is this a way to not pay road tax??

Cobblers. At the last count, there were roughly half a million HGV's registered in the UK. Versus 23 million cars. Who's doing the damage then, do you think?

Drive up the M56 and notice the truck width grooves in the first lane! Of course trucks do more damage - it's not a bad thing, or the fault of the driver, it's just a matter of weight on the roads, and there's definitely a balanced ratio of trucks:cars on motorways.

Back to the topic, if I were to drive around in a Polish car with PL plates, and get stopped, and I'm speaking in an English accent with an English driver's license (but the car is insured, etc), what's the likelihood of me getting grief? I'm not about to do this, just wondering.

If you're insured then it won't be a problem. I'm more concerned about the grooves worn into the nearside lane of the M56, they are quite bad. Rest assured that it's nothing to do with me-I'm always in the middle lane enjoying a 20 minute overtake....

What is really needed is for a complete rethink from the ground up as to why a vehicle is on the road. Do people really need to rack up 10K a year, or is it because things are geared that way? It seems like common practice for people to work miles away, shop miles away, eat miles away. This online shopping thing is quite a good idea from a resources point of view - send out a big van with a load of shopping trips in it rather than a selection of separate cars. Perhaps they could do away with mega supermarkets and just have small ones dotted about which concentrate on essential goods, with the more odd stuff restricted to the Internet. And I've said it for yonks, but home-working needs to be taken more seriously as there's still so many jobs where it could be done. If I was allowed to work from home, I'd barely have to leave the house which would be a plus for both me and the general public. Presumably I'd also only be monitored on my actual work output (which suits me fine). There should be massive incentives for it - old offices could subsequently be converted to housing and sort this stock shortage we're meant to have. It would also mean all these tossers who turn up to work an hour early every day wouldn't be recognised or appreciated for it - great!

In conclusion, I absolutely love driving, but I'd be quite happy to completely get rid of work commutes and trips out to some bloody retail park miles away.

Some good points there.

I used to work at a large factory, They had deliveries from all over the place. They decided to go to some half arsed 'just in time' system, probably because 'OMG it's the latest thing, XXX is doing it, so we've GOT to have it' (Emperor's new clothes syndrome) Anyway, one supplier was in Sunderland, we were near Leicester. We would regularly get a lorry delivery from them in the morning, and then a taxi would arrive in the afternoon with the bits that had missed the morning delivery...

Another favorite trick was a package turning up by courier with 'URGENT! BEFORE 10AM! all over it for someone in the office, chap in goods in would ring them to come down and collect it... 2 weeks later it would still be sat there covered in dust and coffee rings...

Didn't someone suggest doing away with road tax and putting MORE tax on petrol? ;)
