Hmmm, I'm just trying to imagine what sort of person would go in to a BL dealership in 1975 and say "I'd like to order a new MGB. Do you do any colours that look like duck shit?"

I once had a baby shit green Imp.

I had a girlfriend who described her Sandglow Mini Clubman as "shit brown." She wasn't to know I'd already been there with the Sienna Toledo...

That'll do, except hers wasn't an estate, we had to make do with reclining seats, until I got my hands on a Polski Fiat Estate...

Nearly as big as a Volvo in the back, for a fraction of the price (at least back in 1986 I couldn't buy a Volvo for what this cost).

This is just a little theory of mine, but I think lots of the people choosing these colours had colour blindness.

For example, here's a lovely red MG B plucked at random from Google Image Search.

And this is what it would look like if you suffered from a common form of colour blindness (deuteranopia):

And a rarer form of colour blindness (protanopia) produces a similar result:

Colourblindness is absolutely baffling to explain. I'm colourblind and the first and third look quite similar to me. The second one is nowt like them. Do you know a bit more about this subject? Wouldn't mind finding out what specific colourblindness I've got.

I'm no expert, but I find colour blindness fascinating. If the first and third pictures look the same to you, that suggests protanopia, meaning you see reds, greens and yellows as very similar colours. Reds will appear much dimmer to someone with protanopia, for example a tail light wouldn't look as bright as a reversing light.

Its a nice theory but I suspect the 70s BL colour charts had names as will as coloured squares on them.

I didn't mean that they'd accidentally picked what they thought was red, rather that the greeny colour was very familiar to them rather than being a repulsive slime colour.

My friends dad is colourblind. He can't see pink as pink, but being a macho burly bloke he "knows" pink is a poofs colour, yeah, yeah, YOU STARTING? etc. When she got married, she was dead set on pink accessories for the bloke's suits. So they just didn't tell him it was pink.

He also gets out of cutting the grass, as he can't see the orange cable on green grass and keeps mowing through it.

Let's hope for his sake no-one hits on the idea of a petrol mower!
