Shitehaven spots - 10th June update

Most of you probably know, thanks to Derrick Bird, where Whitehaven is now. The scrappage scheme seems to have wiped a load of decent old motors out round here recently (and replaced them with squadrons of Hyundai i10s and Suzuki Altos), but it's still not too bad for spotting.

There's loads more shite around here that I've spotted on my travels. I'll get what I can on camera and report back, in the meantime here's some for starters:

A lovely Corolla, local reg and absolutely spotless. It's used daily as well, from what I can gather.

Another well cared for car:

A Golf:

A true patriot, supporting dear old England by painting a St. George's cross on a, erm, South Korean car:

Some dead shite:

Ronda shite:

Sooty's shite?:

Another Toyota in really good nick:

There's loads of these Micras still about around here:

Posted Image

And finally, a Mk3 Cav:

Posted Image

Please feel free to look at my Flickr account as well - I'm on there as Formula Autos too. I am sad, and have been filling it with cutaway drawings of shite, like this:

Posted Image

I could look at these cutaways for hours. Maybe I should get a life?

Bugger me - its like being on holiday again. Just spent a week in St Bees in me caravan.

Zero 3G internet access so was resigned to odd sessions on the mobile phone wap.

Spotted a very nice yellow Mk2 cortina near Muncaster castle - wife refused to stop the car to let me take photos :(

Did you manage to venture anywhere near Barrow-in-Furness by any chance? Due to the shipyard there a disproportionate number of people in the town can weld, which helps to keep many old cars on the road. I went to College there ten years ago and I was amazed by the volume of shite that happily trundles round. Top spotting, but I didn't carry a camera around with me in those days.

Nearest I got was Dalton (yes I went to the wild animal park and got fleeced - still its about fifty trillion times better than Blackpool Zoo)

Saw Lightning McQueen there....

Going back many years I remeber a mate of my Dad's who despite living in Lytham St Annes always bought his cars privately in Barrow in Furness because; he said they had the best rust protection/underseal in the world, usually in the form of 16 coats of Red Lead paint or whatever they were putting on submarines back in the 70's looking back he did have a few pristine looking vehicles

I dont suppose you know anything about this ^^^ do you?

I do Ted - it's the folly belonging to Catgill Hall nearby. It won't be for sale. I know the owners.

If you want a folly in the area, you might look into this (I think it may still be for sale):

After I couldn't find you I went looking for the cutaway Fiesta and found these instead.

Nice finds Tayne.

Sorry, I don't know how to direct you to my Flickr account though - when I log in flickr.com stays in the address bar. There will be some other way, but I don't know of it.

Comment on something of mine then.

I see from the photo of the box set, and the avatar of Cheerful Charlie Chisholm that you are a Minder fan. If you have watched all 107 episodes you can honestly call yourself a geezer.

Thats fine, and thanks for the info - I can tell the missus and hopefully she will STFU about it now (20 years have I endured tales about the "house on the hill".)

I was looking for a place around Maryport or Frizington a couple of years ago as I got a job offer with Whitehaven CDT (mate of mine is the social worker there and I have always wanted to relocate up that end) but it all fell through when I couldn't sort out schooling for the eldest who has special needs. Its all academic now anyway as pretty much all the CDT's have gone private now and I have dropped back into general healthcare. Still looking, but quite realistic that a move will only happen once the lad hits 16 or 17 and goes to college.

I haz nu spots:

Never seen a Marbella van with the chairman pod on it, thats a great spot as even the normal vans are seriously difficult to see now.

That National is in great condition.

Though somehow you still don't show up in any searches.

I like to cultivate an air of mystery, to compensate for being a boring fart.

Posted

Oh my what a haul! I can't even figure out what this is in the bushes, XJ6??

And those Bonds.... 8) I've got some gen-u-ine WANT for an 875, which I suppose is a side-product of suffering from suicidal depression. Still, what a way to go!(at 85mph off a B-road into a field)

There's at least three XJs in that garden (that is what's hidden in the undergrowth), along with a Range Rover and a David Brown tractor, and that's just the front garden. You can see the back garden from a vantage point nearby and there are a load of tarpaulins in there (under the vegetation) and what looks like one of these:

Posted Image

Sadly, with my camera, nothing worth posting can be photographed.

Some kids playing nearby saw me snapping away, came over and told me they had once broken into the garage next to the Range Rover (just off shot in the first picture) where they found what they described as Austin Powers' car, only in purple. Quizzing them a bit, it was clear they meant an E-type. They seemed so awe-struck by it that I don't think they'd contemplate vandalising it. Luckily, they also tell me the owner's beefed up the locks, and they can't get back in. I peeped through a crack in the door, and by the shape of what's under a tarp, I believe them.

BTW the mechanic who owns the house with a garden full of shite is the father of a friend of mine. Apparently he's a Jag nut, and for my mate's 18th the present from his old man was an XJ-S (beautifully restored, and nigh on dripping with Waxoyl - they'd been using it as a 'hospital job' in the garage for years) - a maroon pre-HE V12. Part of the present was 3 years car insurance, all paid up. When the insurance ran out my mate traded it in for a four year old Rover 416. He said that petrol was costing him too much, and now he had to pay the insurance as well ...

Idiot!

Needless to say, his Dad fell out with him big style. They haven't spoken since, as far as I'm aware.

Ahh the Bond Minicar, never seen one for years.

Three wheels + no roof,i wouldnt fancy my chances of not being decapitated if i rolled one of those over at speed. :)

Posted

That 875 looks familiar....

Clickbold picmoan linkyfold:

Those minicars are truly bizarre devices but pretty unlikely to fall over I should think. Possibly the world's only front wheel driven 3 wheeler? Almost certainly the only car that can be kick-started. The steering moves the whole engine and front wheel assembly via a chain. Imagine if that snaps and you're left with no means of controlling the direction of the beast! Nah, the Imp-engined 875, although possibly a little scary in its own way, bless it, would be my preferred Bondage tool.

details on the MkE/F Bond - is it for sale?

I have a MkC- and thanks for the link FT to your old pics - how did I miss them - the truck load of MkCs is cool!

Posted

If you look on page one of that thread there is a picture of the works outing - dad owned the B in that picture until some time in the late 70's when he sold it. He then restored another B.

I quite fancy a D myself.

I don't think anything there is for sale (875 excepted) - the cars are, I would guess, a mixture of the bodyshop owners own and customers' cars.

It's on the main road from Whitehaven to Egremont if anyone's ever passing (in a village called Bigrigg), and there seems to be a regular turnover of projects. One notable recent one was a Mini Marcos/Midas. It still bombs about around here, so I'll try and bag a piccie. They seem to do a great job on the cars. A giffer spec H reg pre-Rover Metro was recently restored by them as well, and that looked bloody good.

I haz moar.

Some I spotted whilst out today during my dinner hour:

CF ice-cream van. This firm has three of these, all in amazing condition. This one's on the harbourside most days.

A slightly tired '80s 5 series:

Posted Image

I'm seriously impressed by this one. So much so that I went in and asked how much (it's parked outside a repair garage)? The owner gave a definite no, sadly.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I mean the Civic, obviously. Though he did try and interest me in 'Kermit', which is for sale.

I have much more, but my Flickr account's full at the moment. I'll post them as soon as I can.

Posted

Yup - saw the Bimmer. Totally missed the garage though and went via Egremont to Whitehaven a few times last week.

The Co-Op at Egremont rocks. I will be back in a few weeks for the crab apple fair.

If the timings work out for you Ted, try and visit the Lakeland Motor Museum just off the A590 at Backbarrow (that's the road between Barrow and the M6). It's chock full of shite.

The bodyshop's near the Spar/Texaco station between Egremont and Whitehaven.

As for Crab Fair, it's gone a bit technologified recently. They've now got a carbon fibre greasy pole in the Market Place. What is the world coming to?

The only one I've seen since about 1997. Owned by a really nice bloke who tells me he has virtually every bodystyle of Mk2 Cav - only a 2 door to find.

A bad photo, but I had to catch it while I could. It's spotless, and even has a plastic cover over the driver's seat. I just wish I'd caught it in daylight.

Some recent spottage, for your delectation:

5819206210_b130bee8f3_z.jpg

This thing's turned up recently outside a police station near where I live. It seems the owner (a copper?) might have rescued it from being rat-looked. In this photo it's still wearing modern Polo wheels, but it's now on (tatty) original rims. Looks like it's gone to a caring home, hopefully.

5819203610_11140f65c5_z.jpg

Wheels and wonky badge aside, it's not too shabby.

5818635909_1c41923d62_z.jpg

This had a Cosworth sticker on the bootlid. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Cosworth never fettled these, did they?

5818633137_6d11c43f98_z.jpg

Not strictly shite, but when is a Landy not a Landy?

When it's a Santana.

5819195110_53838c3614_z.jpg

Just a small brown Volvo? Well, yes - but one that's obviously owned by a Jedi-level shiteist. Look at the repaired rear wheelarch and the totally monged-up respray of it which ruined the paint on the back door in the process.

5818627575_4e6985a40b_z.jpg

OOOOH! Spotted this down a side street. I had to go closer and try and get a better picture.

5818622225_cf23a3f827_z.jpg

Which I completely failed to do. This was a drive-by shiting, as the owner spotted me pulling up near it and taking my camera out. Still, at least I got a closer shot. Excellent panel fit on the bootlid, I noticed.

5819189776_85aa4ba17c_z.jpg

This has suddenly appeared down a side street opposite work. It's there every morning, facing where I park. Which is nice.

5818611343_11a123f856_z.jpg

Sometimes shite just comes to you. I went out on some far flung calls for work yesterday, and spotted this pulling into the car park I'd just parked in. Not that shite, but I snapped it anyway. The best was yet to come though...

5818617107_abc7b22e9a_z.jpg

When I'd finished my visit I came back to my Mondeo to find this beauty parked next to it.

5818619757_34480cb661_z.jpg

A vision of vinyl-roofed loveliness.

5818613953_a5ed8376a6_z.jpg

5818608597_ec2d290d5a_z.jpg

Then off into the countryside, where this was parked next to a pub:
