1967 Vauxhall Viva paid £60 in 1984, done 55,000 miles still own.

1986 Ford Sierra paid £1500 in 1996 done 140,000 miles sold for £5000.

1994 Vauxhall Astra paid £800 in 2006 done 140,000 miles still own.

1996 Vauxhall Astra paid £175 in 2015 done 70,000 miles still own.

Total cost £2,535 and sold for £5000 so profit just under £2500.  Maintenance would make that a different story.

That doesn't include about 20 cars which have passed through my hands for profit, though sometimes very small profit.  I could list them - but not tonight.  Also doesn't include her indoors cars, which has mostly had a colourful experience (circa five write offs, all repaired......)

Incidentally, I once was getting insurance quotes for the Viva and the man asked how much I paid and when and he basically lost the plot and couldn't stop laughing at someone having owned such a cheap car for so long.

Be boring if we were all the same, wouldn't it?

Your spreadsheet is spookily similar to mine! Only I include induction within the configuration column and I've got a country of origin column but otherwise exactly the same

Feel like spreadsheets should be a topic of it's own 😂

Is there a thread on that?

I've basically averaged a car every other year over 20-odd years of driving, and I've never managed to make even my money back when selling them with one or two exceptions.

No.  I could do one I s'pose.  I just half got it working (half being not working at all).  I'm not as diligent as some about taking photos and describing what I am doing.

Shouldn't be too difficult for me to work out solely on purchase price. Just 8 cars in 31 years.

  1. 1979 Austin Morris Mini 1000 - £450
  2. 1986 Ford Escort 1.4 GL - £1450
  3. 1990 Fiat Tempra 1.4 bASe - £825
  4. 1990 Rover Mini 1000 Racing Green - £800
  5. 1999 SEAT Ibiza 1.4 S 5 door - £4699
  6. 1994  Ford Escort 1.8 L diesel 4 door - £250
  7. 2003 Nissan Almera 2.2 dCi SXE - £3999 (Escort traded in against it for £250 - big win)
  8. 2018 Hyundai i10 1.2 SE - £6750 (Almera traded in against it for £200 - not great)

Grand total of £19,223. Cost of a brand new MG 3 Hybrid, I think.

I don't know about running costs but the Almera cost over £7,000 over 10 years and 8 months. The Hyundai has been much cheaper to run with just minor things and brakes needing expenditure.

Have mentioned this before but now somewhere between 700 to 800 cars, let’s say a rough average of a grand per car…..

Yep…..
