My BMW windscreen has burst!

Hi everyone,
Following yesterday's  incident, there is no chance that the E12 will make Rustival this year. Unfortunately, the issues are more complicated (and expensive) than a simple windscreen replacement:
Windscreen blown and more bad news! #bmw

Shit!
Well done for managing to get it off the road safely after that. It’s a good job none of the glass went in your eyes too!

Hopefully a solution will come up soon🤞

Ouch. That rust may be the cause of the screen exploding, as the rusting metal expands it puts pressure on the glass unevenly.

My Dolly 1850's screen randomly exploded one hot day, but the surround was very crusty.

Yes, rust and added flex due to weaker structure might have played the main role in this.

I remember having a Merc Sprinter van at work and I hit a pheasant on the motorway with it. Sadly I couldn’t avoid it as it flew out of the hedge and across the road, but it hit the top centre of the windscreen and smashed it. That was a laminated screen and it hit so hard it actually came through. There were tiny shards of glass all over the cab inside after.

I got the screen replaced then it cracked again a few weeks later. The second guy that replaced that screen said the first fitter hadn’t used enough adhesive to fit it so as the vans shell flexed there wasn’t anything to take the stress off the glass and it just broke.
Goes to show how much flex a vehicle body has in it.

Have a good holiday, hopefully something will work out once your back👍

Bloody hell, that's scary as hell too. A friend of mine hit a pigeonnag 70mph and smashed his headlight completely. Light birds at high speed cause heavy damage.

thank you vey much. I think I have a solution for it, but not confirmed yet as i still need to see the parts.

That looked scary. At least you weren't hurt though. Toughened glass 'screens make you appreciate how good laminated are.

Have your holiday & take stock. It looks a quite nice example so it might be worth saving up & getting the bits fixed. Don't think it needs a full restoration tbh, I'd just get what needs doing fixed & enjoy it, That way you can enjoy it & get your mojo back. It's an old car so it will have some rot but it doesn't look like a wreck.

The brakes thing might be the servo's these have two servo's don't they?

One thing I would say is when you do drive it again wear glasses & bear in mind some glass will have dropped into the air vents so be wary for a while when you put the fan on & some bits/particles may come out.

Good luck.

That's great advice and i really appreciate it, thank you.

Luckly I was wearing glasses and they were hit by the broken glass and chipped the lenses, so you can imagine if I didn't have them.

the braking system was completely overhauled with new and rebuilt  parts  .
