No, not sporty Saabs particularly.

Stuck in traffic with the aircon working hard on one of the hottest days of the year my 9-5 Aero Hot started bonging at me and the now famous 'red gravy boat light' came on every time it was on tickover.

Oil level was at full so I am guessing that it was oil temperature. Should we be using a different grade of motor oil with more hot weather predicted?

What do you think?

Sounds more likely to be the oil pickup screen being blocked tbh.

Will need sump drop and a new oil pick up fitting or the old one cleaning out.

What year is it?

The oil pick up screen clogging risk was mitigated on post 2004 models with an improved PCV system, reducing sludging.

IIRC, the pick up o-rings still harden on the later ones though, causing it to suck in air and bring the light on.

They absolutely do, those O rings are a nightmare. My 9-3 TTID died because of exactly that, and I thought it was a cluster issue as it only did it for half a second on startup, so I ignored it. Then it started sounding like a dry sump Ducati and it was game over.

That's a completely different issue and the engine is unrelated to the old H Saab engine. The TTid is an Insignia engine made by Fiat. The oil pickup seal hardens as said and sucks in air instead of oil, causing low pressure and fucking the engine.

The earlier 9-5s had a PCV system that wasn't quite up to the job, caused oil sludging and it got picked up in the strainer. Nothing to do with the o-ring seal on the pickup pipe (that's not to say that it couldn't happen)

Car has had a thorough inspection, oil change and service and no reason for the problem was found. Its not done it again since so I am assuming it was weather and traffic related. I've given it a stern talking to and warned it not to do it again.
