Bizarre cooling problem.......

Saab 900 turbo. Cooling fans cut in when they should, gauge about 3/4 the way up, run for about 10 seconds, then cut out. Temp goes up a little more, fans cut in again, for 10 seconds, then cut out, repeat ad nauseum. No sign of leaks, or HG traumas, the bloody fans just won't stay on.........any ideas?

Crocked thermo switch...had it on an old L series that I used to own

Water pump lost a few fans? Mine is/was doing the same. It's also the very warm weather we're having.

Second the thermo switch. The water pump being rubbish wouldn't effect the fans switching off, it would just mean they would work all the time. I recently changed everything except the rad on mine, it is all very striaght forward. Except now it is showing the Rad up to be rubbish!

Firstly check contacts on the passenger side of the rad. It could be a dodgy connection that is cutting in and out and it should be on all the time. Also check the fuse, I had one broke up in plastic housing and so wasnt always making contact.

Themo switch can be done without coolant loss normally. Dont get the Saab one £54 get alternative £11 Here

My Carlsson's fan is running alot at the moment but mainly because of the weather and also the flipping great heat producing turbo. :D

I have assumed that you ahve got a C900!

'91 900 16 valve turbo rag top, with 55k on the clock, but it's been in storage for ages, and it's all a bit arthritic............poss for sale shortly......

The thermostatic switch is doing it's job isn't it?

I have an old GM one that 100% works if you get stuck - it's got three pins so it's for a two speed radiator fan.

I may just have struck lucky for a change. Was speaking to a UK specialist, and when I described the car, and it's spec, he said I might have an extremely rare special edition, which could be worth a few bob.........

It is indeed, along with a body kit, 3 spoke alloys, leather seats [electric] aircon, cruise control, wooden dash, automatic 16valve turbo.

Sounds like a Monte Carlo. Not my cup of tea but some people go barmy over them. Only thing is that there are a few copies around so need to check whether it is real or not.

Dan from Paradise saabs rebuilt one and it went for about £14k

Was an immaculate car at the end.

Spoke to a nice guy called Steve Lewis [who's a specialist] he's extremely keen to buy it, so we'll see..........

He is indeed. I think he's in the process of selling one of his children to pay for the Saab. Top bloke, real enthuisiast

I had a Honda Legend that had the same problems, it was the fan relay. Surely Richard can sort it?

I'll be in touch tommorrow with a view to a er view, I like these cars but not the colour.

Bizarrely, the clour is one of the things that make it worth a lot more than a standard 900 rag top! Will hot wire the fan switch tomorrow [Richard currently...ho ho hot wire, currently ho ho]] out of action with damaged hand.
