All checked over, tyres pressures, lights etc checked, topped up fluids and all fasteners and clips etc checked over.
Insured with a quick phone call and free tax purchased online as its already registered as historic class.

Which led to the next picture, stopped for a quick picture at the side of the road after what are probably its first 3 miles legally on the road for a good number of years

Doesn’t it look happy in the sun (except it’s a car and isn’t happy, just a collection of metals and plastic and fabric sitting there)

Back home now waiting for it to cool so I can check oil level again and see if any LHM has escaped.
Think we will be OK on LHM front but it will leak oil, it’s a G flat four, they all do at this point in history.

Mel Gibson was over the moon with the progress

Today a new part turned up that will mean I can stop getting the fear and actually know how much fuel is in the tank.

Original Citroen part number still on the box, also, I liked the retro (period) packaging by Jaeger

The cars fuel gauge has only ever read this

But if you open up the hand access panel in the boot floor (every car should have one)

Whip out the old sender, compared with new, seems legit as it is the same size and has all the right connections

Great news, the fuel gauge now works

Phew, that’s lucky after the price of the new sender unit.
And it does mean I can use the car a bit more for local runs to get confidence up that’s it’s not going to ftp cos I’ve stupidly run out of fuel.

yes, it might well ftp for other reasons, but not lack of fuel at least, fingers toes and eyes firmly crossed.

he old ones were solid, no nitrogen left and although they have recharge valves, I doubt they will be any good to recharge.

There is a gentleman who attends the Autumn Citroen Car Club's 'Chevrons' rally at Little Horwood (and probably others) who brings kit and gas for recharging Citroen spheres. He does them 'while you wait' on the day, for a small donation. He prefers that the spheres are off the car.  Our XM could do with a recharge on its central spheres, so we hope to arrange for these to be done at this year's event.

Thats good to know, thanks. I have kept the old spheres, so maybe he can try and re-charge them if i can catch him at a rally.

If your fuel gauge bounces around quite a lot that was normal from new. My father had a year old, 10k mile X2 and lots of others GSs and there was not must stabilisation.

I’m not surprised, a lot of older vehicles had very floppy fuel gauge senders 😂

Right now I’m just happy fuel level is no longer total guesswork
