BMW 635 CSis. Tell me about 'em, quick!

Got offered one this afternoon, not seen it yet, gonna go and have a look at it shortly. Other than knackered engine / gearbox / diff, interior, suspension etc, and massive amounts of crustification... what else is there?

It has been described as "Ok, but the front wings are a bit crispy, runs well, been sitting for a year or so", which doesn't fill me with joyful anticipation but I still figure it's worth a look.

What would a slightly crusty but running example be worth? It's an A reg, so not a nice highline job. Red, with leather.

A beautiful, stylish and fast way to waste all your money.

Buy it. 8)8)8)

I'm not short of beautiful, stylish and quick ways to lose money already, Pog. In fact, that's what I do best.

However, what are they worth? A grand(ish)?

£5k for a really perfect one.

£300-700 for one like yours.

I do remember a forum with one on that didn't sell at £2500 and the guy broke it. It was a tidy one!

They are very, very nice but a rough one will bankrupt you.

Front wings are 500 notes each.

It's not for sale in Wallasey is it? On the corner of Breck Rd?

Don't forget the cost of metric tyres as well.

Nah, tis local to me, and it's on imperial tyres. BBS rimz FTW.

This is it.

Trim seems intact (black leather Recaros), exhaust is ok, floor is all there, boot floor is mint, inner wings are all there, a-posts are all there, it's a manual, exhaust seems fine and he's had the figure of eight bushes done at the back. It does need two front wings repaiing, a bit of repair work to the drivers door around the mirror and four tyres. Started off the button after sitting on the path for about a year (after the battery was reconnected, obviously). Power steering is nice'n'quiet, and the 'lecky windoze all work.

They really don't suit being red do they?

The one near me has been for sale for about a year and looks no worse. It may be worth a look.

I suspect the one by yours will be a bit less cheap than this was, and will have done more than 99k miles...

How much is it?

Hopefully cheap enough to make some money out of...

(PM sent..)

It's the frilly wings that put me off. Handbuilt by Karmann so even OEM Beemer wings will need fettling. Mind you it's cheap enough for a gamble or chuck an MOT on it and bung it on Pistonheads for a grand. You might even make Shed Of The Week.

I think the inner wings rot out badly on these....they did one on wheeler dealers so look for it on youtube for some info.

Cool as fcuk car though, even sat still. (Ford, thats how you do it!)

My mate bought one for 300 quid that didn't run. There was no fuel, not sure what he did, but he got it running and he sold it for 2,500. I'd get it and run it for a bit.

Brutal shark-nose FTW.

I KNOW THAT CAR !!

Did he buy it off someone calles Les Carswell ?

He had about 15 cars (and 8 of them were parked in our garden at the time) and that BMW used to sit for ages.

Remember getting a lift in it , not sure if he let me drive it.

635 CSI that one , if i have remembered correctly.

And i think the problem was to do with the Fuel pump, someone slashed afew wires.

Thanks for posting that Dave, that's made me smile :)

Had a couple of E28s, always fancied an E24.

As has been said, the front wings are a problem if they're totally fubar'd. No longer available OEM, and the very infrequent specialist runs of pattern pressings are bookoo money. Same goes for the metric TRX tyres, though this one looks like it's got 15" E34 x-spokes on anyway so no worries. Also the dash binnacles give up the ghost- bizarrely, they are powered by 2 ni-cad rechargeable AA batteries which are generally buggered and leaking by now, so the instruments let go one at a time (one day you'll start it and find the rev counter is dead). Cure is either a recon set or an evening with some Maplin batteries and a soldering iron...

Front suspension is the usual late-70s BMW labrinth of linkages and ball joints, any of which can give you a shimmy, shake or shudder (and other things beginning with 'sh').

Subtley menacing looks, luxury, M30 burble.... Still fancy one 8)

I can haz 635 CSi.

It seems blob on mechanically. Needs pads and tyres, but other than the exhaust hanging a bit low and occasionally knocking it's fine. Engine is sweet as a nut, no rattles or shakes from anything. Very quiet compared to the SD1s. Appears to be bloody quick from initial shakedown. Not pushed it hard, but it picks up well even at lowish revs.

Speedo doesn't work, but that's normally diff connection. Everything else seems to work fine, even the OBC seems to work fine (other than mph related stuff, obviously. That won't work while the speedo doesn't.)

Haven't tried the headlamp wash/wipe, aerial or central locking.

It's got the original dealer plates, and it's a local car. Which is nice.

Pete has done it again

Bet you got it at a fantastic price, good on you mate.

Guessing the average MPG may be the slightly better than the 3.5 SD1, or are the the same ?

Don't know about fuel consumption, but I imagine it's about the same as the 3.5, yeah. Maybe a tad better on a run.

Not a major issue anyway. Something will have to go soon... Maybe the 4.2 if I get a decent offer for it. Everything's for sale

Posted

You know you will never get an oppertunity like the 4.2 again, but i understand your reasoning behind it.

Just hope you make the right decision and never regret it.

I know, but something has to give. The 635 needs fettling before it could be used as a daily, the 3.5 SD1 is reliable (and taxed until February..), the 4.2 needs less work than the 635, but more than the 3.5. Problem is, the 4.2 is quite probably the most valuable of the lot as they stand.

So they're all up for grabs for anyone who's willing to give me enough money.

Posted

Not sure where the silver/champagne Beemer came from! It probably was! I bought a load of cars off the bloke who sold it though!

Nice purchase, you will make some kind of profit on it!

Posted

No mate i understand.

How much are we talking for the 3.5 ? ... as my dad is weirdly interested
