I heard talk that the Dutch in some cities were thinking about removing the milieuzones. First time was two years ago. I understand some cities have delayed the implementation of the milieuzones. But they are coming.
This is one reason why last year we came to NL to purchase a petrol engine car. There is a greater choice.

The low emissions zones here are usually aimed at commercial diesel vehicles, and seem to have little effect (major companies with large fleets don't tend to drive really old vehicles anyway).

Petrol cars are often bought and driven by private owners, unlike diesels. Much more choice indeed.

Not what we (wife and I) read.

I do not want a Euro 5 or 6 diesel because of the complicated emission controls installed on the engine. Far too much to go wrong.

Eleven Dutch municipalities have low-emission zones. The low-emission zone rules usually only apply to trucks and coaches, and sometimes also to diesel-powered passenger cars and vans. Road signs show which vehicles are affected by the low-emission zone.

There are several Dutch cities which have introduced zero-emission zones in their city centres from 1 January 2025. These zero-emission zones apply to trucks and vans.

Low emissions zones aren't that widespread really, and the ones that do are mostly aimed at vans and trucks.  Only four cities have rules that apply to passenger cars too. Future zones that are considered all seem to be for vans and such, and many of the plans may not become a reality if certain local parties are voted out of power or if protests are too severe. Here in Hilversum a few city council members suggested a "zone" as well, which would consist of literally a single street in which diesel vans and trucks would not be allowed. After this was rightfully ridiculed in local media the plan seems to have died a quiet death.
