I never tried my old Land Rover off road, but I did have it during the great snowfall of 2009 and without a huge roofrack, without chequerplate everywhere, without massive tyres and without a load of spotlights it plugged on through the snow without any extra effort. It was so good that even when I did stupid things to get it stuck, it just drove on, barely spinning its wheels.

is the one with the flat front like that a V8.. yeah was a great crack, fancy getting myself a cheapo disco to rattle across the terrain 8)

Thanks for the pictures- looks like a good event. Always great to see Discos getting a thorough off-road workout- even 20 years after they were launched you still get people (usually wearing army surplus camo and [ironically] driving a Range Rover Classic) complain that they aren't 'proper' Land Rovers.

Yep :) Basically a LWB Series III with the drivetrain from a Range Rover dropped in and (somehow) detuned to get 91 hrsp from a 3.5 litre V8. A 109V8 Station Wagon like that (but in Java Green!) is top of my Land Rover WANT List. The French seem to quite like their Land Rovers- they have their own Land Rover enthusiasts magazine called 'Land' which I bought once on a holiday and picked through with my best GCSE French. It had lots of wierd semi-English phrases like "le motoeur gazole 'two-and-a-quarter litre'" and the review of the Freelander 2 seemed to suggest that the only reason it was worth buying was because it had a Peugeot diesel engine in it

i think its drummed to kids in school that french build best.. :?

42 vehicles turned up, was kinda weird was a huge tent in the middle of the field, huge union jacks flying, but they were french

Yeah get an old Discovery.I bought mine three years ago. There are two disused quarries near here and they both hold pay and play days every couple of months. One is used by an offroad school and the other for the offroad course when the Land Rover show is held in Peterborough so both can be challenging. The day usually starts off nice and gentle but as your confidence grows things can get silly.I've had two opposing wheels off the ground stuck in a gulley with a 30 foot drop to my left.On another occaision I went up a steep incline that previously only went down.Near the top I hit a rock and bent a steering arm.Ah,that's why people fit steering guards. It can be great fun in a standard car and Land Rover parts are cheap so if you break something it won't cost a fortune to repair.

LAND is GR8! I get it every month.French LR events are generally fantastic, especially the 'Series only' events. They love them and generally their motors are kept in VERY good order.Nice pics VWP. We'll be over again soon, off to the Czech Republic on Thursday in my 2a and with a pair of LWBs (one a eBay buy which is staying out there). Can't wait!

That one is a 'Stage 1' pretty much a series 3 on leaf springs but with Range Rover running gear.

i get confused as to what the difference is between land rovers :?

Its quite easy really, just remember these -

Pretty good is that Tayne 8) . I can never tell an 86 from an 88 by looking at the wings, the easiest way to peep at the front panel - an 88 has just a single slot behind the grill. Also the dumbirons are right at the end of the chassis rails on a 88, and a couple of inches further back on a 80 or 86.

You Land Rover people are all too clever  Great pics VWPowered, looks like a fantastic day out

I can't see the picture, but great statement!

What became of the Land Rovers which tipped over? I didn't think it was possible to overturn them as I thought that was the whole point of them, that they could transverse landscape which defies gravity!? :?

Agreed but the coil sprung v8 classics and discos are a shit load more comfortable to drive on and off road. :P

If SWMBO agreed I'd have a Series to park up next to my Classic RR

Just been through rebuilding my dads IIa SWB around a galv chassis and loved every second of the job. Meccano for grown ups. 8)

I'd have another Classic RR if I could afford to do one justice :) Great motors, I grew up with them.
