Modern Shite turbo woes

The turbo has decided to munch it's bearings on the daily focus tdci, just great. :( After laughing at fords 1k and seeing that recon units are about £450 I have found a brand new OEM one for 570+vat. Ouch.Anyone any experience of recon units? We are hoping to keep the focus for a few years yet and and and a bit nervous of rebuilt units (with no evidence to back up my nervousness). Or should I just stick a second hand part on and keep my fingers crossed?

I replaced my Volvo's turbo with a second hand one, it's clocked 10k miles on the second hand one with no problems - as yet.The second hand unit was £95 with three months guarantee from a Volvo Breaker. Worth it if you ask me seeing as new ones were £1000+

I think they are a bit failsome, thank goodness it didn't break up and lunch the engine.

A few years back a friend sent his kippered Saab 900 turbo off to Turbo Technics in Northampton and they repaired it at less than the cost of an exchange unit and did a top-class job into the bargain. It may be worth contacting them to see if they still provide that service.

Can you get the old one off and see whats wrong with it? If it really is just a goosed bearing, they can be surprisingly cheap to replace and rebalance.

I put a recon one on an Octavia and no bother. The turbo was from a company called Midland Turbos. Can't remember contact details etc :( but it was about £400 instead of £1000 fitted at the dealer.

Yeah about 425 is the going rate for a recon one. I will be forced into a decision soon enough, cheers.
