I can answer that...

At a company-wide 'state of the nation' type presentation by Ford top brass in around '98, the then-unnamed Fusion programme was revealed to employees, dubbed an urban activity vehicle (whatever that means).

At the time we all had a good old giggle and thereafter I considered the Fusion with contempt. My dad bought one in about 2002 and I laughed at him, but it was great for the dog and DIY trips then Sister Grogee inherited it and loved it.

Nowadays I think there's a lot to like about a taller-bodied Fiesta and they're a great An Car, all that extra roofspace isn't sexy but it is good for fastening children into child seats, getting in and out for mobility-impaired etc.

I'd argue it was a good way of stretching the Fiesta platform to a wider audience (along with the Puma) whereas the Golf Plus was a bit of a spare part next to a Golf Estate.

Happy travels @djoptix, and yes £10 KFCs can FRO.

I remember reading an article years ago which said that the original target market for the Fusion was young hip urban types.  To be fair, some Fusion buyers may have been young hip urban types 60 years previously.

I reckon most of the buyers did have a young hip, but the rest of them was old.

Looks sound, but not rock n roll!

My Mum bought one of these as an ex-dealer demo in about 2003.  It replaced the Focus Estate (which I absolutely loved) and I always did deride it a bit, especially as it was gold and had the 1.4 diesel engine.  Just about the slowest car I think my parents have ever owned and I much preferred my Dad's 1.6 Fiesta Zetec.

It seems a lot better in hindsight and I now appear to have developed a soft spot for them.  Oh dear.

Great buyage.  This was an absolute bargain.
