YoWhat's the rules again for the latest a car must be registered before it HAS to have a catalytic converter on for the MoT (or rather, HAS to pass the cat test)?Would a J-plate (14/7/92) qualify for cat removal? ;)KTHXBAI

Pretty much 'K' plate onwards, although some dispensation was given to run old stock out iirc. Seem to remember carb Cavs on a 'K' and such like.

Technically K plate, but there were a few exceptions like Metros with carbs that were stocked up in a field waiting for blind/stupid buyers to collect them for three years. 1995 is about the time all cars had to have them. When i bought my S class, a 1991 H, it was possible it had the cat from new, knocking about 17 brake off the output. Thankfully, after crawling underneath it, I never found one.

My polo was a catted one on '91 J, and it happily lost it without causing MoT issues. My potential purchase is a '92 J and I just wondered if there would be any difference, I assume it would have one as standard since it's injectorised and german.

It has got a cat, and you can bin it. It got tested last time on pre-cat standards, although it met cat requirements.MOT tester: "Fuckin' hell, it'd pass a cat test, this"Me: "I should hope so, it's got one."

Aaah, I had the reverse.... I had a tester try for ages (and eventually succeed) to get my Polo to pass the cat test... he was cursing and telling me how it needed tuning but he managed it.It had a decat pipe :)Hehe I was being all secretive about my "potential purchase" too but the game's up now. I've got my train ticket, it's an open one so I'm aiming to be there for 7 but it might be 1/2 hour either way, I'll let you know en-croute as there's three changes for me to fook up (Leeds, Manchester and bizarrely, Wigan)

'92 K plate onwards.K plate Range Rover 3.9's have three cats.A few years ago I took my mate's '92 J reg 3.9 for an MOT.The twat of a tester tried a cat test on it.He revved and revved it but wouldn't listen to me about no cats being fitted.I reached inside and switched it off then told him to check. He went in the office to ask another tester then came back and revved the nuts off the car and blew the heater matrix.Twat.The boss came back whilst I was joining the heater pipes together. After explaining what had happened the boss MOT'd it correctly. The electrics were never the same and the car was scrapped a couple of years later due to this.Yeah this was the same tester who tried to fail my Discovery on rotten inner wings. It's got a seperate chassis you numpty.A week after the Range Rover incident he got the sack.

1/1/1993 IIRC, although it's possible the legislation here in NI is slightly different (For example our first MOT is @ 4 years old)A mate had a Metro 1.1 K Series on an SU carb, with Cat. That was one SCARY looking carb, sensors and wires all over it.
