Influx of LHD shite in UK?

I was told by DVLA when I asked last September that if I was the registered keeper of the Escort when it came into the country, that I wouldn't be able to drive it here.. sounded very dodgy to me as well.

I don't buy that, how are they going to know?If it looks like being awkward, can't you take some spare UK plates over, drive through Europe with them and change to spare Czech plates when you get to Calais?Who's going to know about foreign cars?

I think it's a major pain in the butt to register a Spanish car to a person that doesn't have a permanent address in Spain. So you could buy a car in Spain but then driving it through Spain could be pretty dodgy. If you got stopped by the Spanish police I think you might find yourself in Spanish jail.My father in law (who is Spanish) will hardly drive the car round the corner without having a big wadge of documents with him and I think most Spaniards are the same.Ironically I have been stopped by Spanish police a few times and always found them to be friendly and courteous. They just don't seem to have the bad attitude of the cops here. Mind you each time I was stopped it was random stops rather than because I'd done something wrong.

You need to keep a mobile phone up your arse in a johnny, then, when you're thrown roughly into jail stripped of your belongings you can phone the embassy. Or use the phone to pay off the large rapisto who you're sharing a cell with.

Funnily enough, I'm seriously in the mood for flying to the south of France, buying an Ami 6 and driving it back. So enthused for this idea that the flight idea isn't scaring me the way it normally would!

Can I come too? I have been wanting to do that exact same thing for "some" time.

I was chatting to someone today, apparently theres a company that can transport a car from Spain.. (cant remember exactly where) to Derby for £300.

Cor, now that is tempting. But kind of takes the fun out of it!

I have that exact same desire. Fly down there, spend a day or three finding an nice example of old Citroen / Peugeot / Renault / Simca grot and drive it back.

Where's Metrobi when we need him?! Imagine the joy of cruising down to the south of France on an old Metrobus! Might take a while like...

I've had a keen interest in doing something like that for a long while, my mate drove his old W reg Berlingo a couple of years ago to his parents place near Alicante and told me how much fun it was and then i went there myself last year and saw lots of old snotters about and all i could think about was driving one back.Mind you i wouldn't know what to do with it once i got home though.

I'd like to do that when I get back from the states next year actually, when I can get some cash together. If say, three of you go down in one car and the other two both buy something like an Ami 6, you could probably pay for the whole trip by selling one when you get back home as they have mega Citroen rarity tax over here. I'd be interested to know the logistics of it terms of inport tax and stuff like that, I'd like to think it's just as easy as driving on to the ferry and driving off the other end but I fear there is much more to it than that...

You think like me, Trigger. Whenever I used to go on holiday to Spain when I was younger, I always did dream of driving an old shitter back from there to the UK, something like an old Mk3 Escort or something of similar vintage.I went to France with the ex a couple of years ago and all throughout the holiday I harboured a secret desire to find, buy and drive back a Renno Twingo, I could well have done it. Shame I didn't really...And yes, I wouldn't know what to do with it when I got it home either!
