says the rear electric windows are slowsame thing used to happen every few years on my 96 Passat which was a very similar design (the B3/B4 Passat was basically a pumped up Golf). It was because the wires would snap from bending too much where they went throught the rubber tube between the B piller and the rear doorI used to pull the rubber back and solder the broken halves of the wires back together. Probably one wire has lost half of the strands already causing a high resistance and therefore too little power to the motor

Bloody teenage stepkids, eh! I've got 2, the eldest of whom will be able to hit the road in November. (Though at the moment she's too engrossed in shitty computer/xbox/playstation rubbish to know what day it is so the day might pass by un-noticed ...)

Hey, that Golf looks pretty clean for that kind of money. Should be fairly easy to sort the minor issues. Just keep him away from Lakeside Halfords if you can....

Judging by the ridiculous exhaust and "lovely" faux checker plate mats, it's already spent some time there...

Goodness, thats only a flirtation with the car park outside Lakeside Halfords! Perhaps I should have rephrased that to dont let him IN rather than near....

Right then, it's all gone a bit pear shaped, and I'd like to pick your collective brains.

Upon start-up, whether hot or cold, it's started to "hunt" like mad. it's parked outside my house, and I just had to move it, and the revs are going up and down like a bride's nightie.

up to about 1750, then down to 500ish, then back up, back down, nearly conking out.

The boy says it's ok-ish when your driving, but if you're changing down, the revs don't die off when you dip the clutch, it "sort of pauses" then drops, and when he's waiting at traffic lights, it hunts, but not always within the range mentioned above - occasionally from 1500 to 500, then 1300 to near stall, then 1200 then dies.

Any ideas?

eBay link no longer works so can't see exactly what car it is sorry.

However does it have an IACV? If so my money would be on that. Either clean it up (decent quality choke and carb cleaner) or replace it.

cavette is right but we need the following:

year

engine

ignition

carb or injection

It's an N plate mark 3 1781cc Golf. Not sure re: carb/injection, but I'm guessing injection.

Whats a IACV?

Idle Air Control Valve - (stepper motor in Japanese cars) allows the ECU - electronic control unit - to regulate the airflow to the throttle.

When idling the ECU uses the IACV as well as the ignition system to maintain the idle speed.

As your car is almost certainly an EFI model the first check would be to replace the IACV with a known good one. IACVs can be pricey so get a couple of 2nd hand ones first.

It could also be the ignition modulation whic the ECU also uses to balance idle speed but I would think that if the car is behaving under greater than idle loads it is more likely to be fuel related than ignition

dirty throttle body can also be a cause of hunting and irregular ignition but given the wild swings you one is making I think cavette is probably right -

both my 940 and my current 535i hunt but due to dirty throttle bodies which I can't be ersed to clean

My bet is the IACV as well, although not a golf, dads car did this exact same thing a while ago and cleaning that properly sorted the problem! !

UPDATE:

Had a quick look at it about an hour ago, squirted some cleaner onto it, seemed to improve slightly; he came and got car for work tonight, he's ragged the arse out of it all the way, and apparently its almost normal again.

He'll be having a proper look later on apparently, when the bosses have all gone home!!!

Found the offending item on eBay for about £30+p&p, so if he buggers it up, it won't be too costly.

Thanks for the assistance chaps!

Fecked lambda sensor was the cause of this on my 2.0 8v Golf- similar thing, cleaned the idle control valve and thrashed it, sort of cleared up but then came back. Try unplugging the sensor (4-pin plug down on the offside of the engine bay) if it happens again.

Was a similar hunting scenario though, I got a new lambda from the scrapper for £2 and then binned the cat.

Right, as of 18.30 last night when Mr Golfie got bummed by a Punto, and in turn bummed a mark 4 Astra, he's without a car again.

twat-boy in the Punto has admitted liability and all that, but obviously, the Lad is still at risk of being butt-fucked by the insurance companies.

So far, I've printed out a couple of adverts off Auto trader and exchange and mart so he's got documentary proof of the cost to replace.

is there anything else he/we/I need to do? I've not had a car written off since 1990, and I'm out of practice!

I don't know if the car is still in his/your possession but if it is clean it to within an inch of it's life. AutoTrader is the best place to value the car, go on-line and 'save' as many as possible, especially any more expensive than your's.

Keep any receipts for work carried out/servicing/repairs and just be prepared for them (insurance) to try and offer you shit money and lie to you.
