KarLek ShunThread REPRISE: BORDER CROSSING

PC: two. One in the Cardiff station chod bin, grim.

The first train was late (of course) which meant that I missed my connection (of course). Now waiting for the next train to Tir-na-nog or Bronwyn or whatever the hell it's called.

Bargod.

Weirdly it's stopped raining, and I'm officially in Wales.

Bloody confusing trains. They were all late in one big bum chain of trains. Good job I didn't get on the wrong one. This one claims to go to Caerphilly, anyway.

And Thornhill, which is my surname.

It's raining again.

Missed this. Would have waved as you came past my house. Should have been one the fancy new TFW trains...

Hi. The names Ken. Ken Dowling. You've probably heard of me; I'm the deputy stockroom manager for Werthington Plastics. I'm a hard-working, no-nonsense boy from Leeds. I pull no punches. That's why I've decided on a BMW 525i for my company car. It says I mean business, and I do mean business. The salesman assured me Wining Silver was the best colour.

She's packing six of Bavaria's finest cylinders lined up like my ducks: in a row. Six finely honed autogears to match them because I'm too busy to change gears myself. Spec? M-Sport of course: finely honed dynamics for the discerning driver. Black leather because I'm scared of colours.

On the open road she silently eats up the miles as I judge lesser drivers.

I'm a family man too, that's why I chose the Touring (it's not an estate, mate). 'Er indoors has me going all over the place at the weekends and we love our August week away in St Ives. They all know us down there, and treat us with respect. We only got dogshit on our door handles a couple of times.

In short, this is a winner's car, or a driving legend's car. You choose.

(thanx attack to @w00dy for a painless, pleasant and swift barter. "W00d" do business again. 14/10.)

Good:

Virtually silent. Great stereo. 31mpg isn't bad for a big old bus. Goes alright once it's wound up. Feels solid AF. Lovely interior. Smells nice.

Bad: Tyres are shot (I knew this). I-Drive is comically 2004. Driver's seat creaks a bit. The cupholder couldn't cope with a 500ml bottle of Lilt.

Autobox wavers around as if it's on/off on the torque converter lockup. It seemed better after a long drive (thinner fluid?).

Wipers creak a bit. Clunk from front when I mounted my drive. Steering wheel very slightly crooked.

Job list:

Tyres. Four of 'em. Probably premium ditchfinders like Riken.

Wandering autobox. Fluid change and filter screen first.

Reversing sensors. I'm too old  busy to look behind me.

Aux input. There's only so much Radio 4 a man can take.

Rear seat screens: get one of them working for Master Grogee.

Boot floor catch thing: it embarrassingly failed at customer handover.

Lights: polish. I note with interest it has lights washers - I wonder if they work?

Wiper blades - I'll look out for some cheap ones.

Never mind Ken. I'm calling you Barry from now. Does it have a glovebox torch and can you get Radio 2?

Good to meet you and good to see it's already managed the tip run.

I enjoyed wafting around in it yesterday, hope it treats you well.
