Maxi 1750HL/Austin 1100 (and organs!) (31/03/10)

If we're going to get our organs out, here's my reed organ in a field a few years back (when I had a lot less hair!). I'd just picked it up for a bargain £15. I've also got a free upright piano in the kitchen. It's not in the best of condition, and desperately needs a tune-up, but it doesn't really matter as I'm far from an expert on either!

Ah, the 1750HL is Brooklands green and Motorsport specification. Those steering wheels were robbed from the Austin 1300GT and MG1300 - BL reused everything back then. These also had a padded dash and not the trad Maxi wooden plank. HL's seemed to be very prone to using lots of oil iirc. they used to go quite well though, enough to scare Escort 1600 Sports.....

I must admit I wanted one with wooden dash but I think I may actually prefer the padded one. I think Leyland gave it a padded one as they thought it matched the more "sporty" image of the HL.

I will need some soon, I do have a can but does anyone know if you can still get it?

sump is the 1st thing that hits the pavement

I had a scare the other week, hadn't realised how low it was!

That house organ you have was also known as a welson...my grandfather had exactly the same model and i played loads as a child ....as it got older he always had it in bits messing about about with the internals - great memories!

Here are some pictures of my other car, a 1966 Austin 1100.

I am undecided what to do with this tbh. I want to concentrate on the Maxi this year and can't decide whether to put her/him in dry storage or sell.

Continuing the organ theme here is the organ which I play at St. Mary Oldswinford, it is a 1901 Norman and Beard of Norwich with 35 speaking stops and I believe around 1,500 pipes.

Cor, can we have a special Autoshite worship service? Can you play any Metallica? Love 'wrong' stuff played on organs. For our wedding, a friend cobbled a load of tunes together and played it on a Harmonium. Cobbled is the wrong word. It was fappin' brilliant. Metallica, Van Morrison and Bill Bailey!

the more "sporty" image of the HL.

It was sporty alright. 165 section tyres and an electric screenwasher added to the aura of sheer sporting luxury.Stunning 1100 btw. I restored a 1966D Morris in 2005, Connaught green with porcelain green trim. Still one of my fave cars.

I do like a nice Mk1 ADO16. They somehow look cleaner than later cars, even with the longer rear fins. Wouldn't mind a go on the St Mary's organ either - looks big enough to be useful and small enough to be manageable.

Love 'wrong' stuff played on organs.

One of my all-time favourite Simpsons scenes is the one where Bart has the congregation singing Iron Butterfly with the old biddy on the organ struggling valiantly to keep up.

Stunning 1100 btw

Thanks, unfortunately the pictures make it look better than it is. It probably needs one new wing and the interior needs stripping down and cleaning/replacing. It is fairly solid and the engine is very sweet. I have recently had sme bearing and first gear replaced in the gearbox.

Sure I could knock something up, there are some great youtube videos of non-organ music played on the organ.Quite of rock and dance music have featured pipe organs.Peter.

I had to sell my 1966 Morris 1100 2 years ago due to circumstances and I've regretted every second of it. It was the one I'd always wanted and took so long to find one that was rust free and unwelded.I'd seriously think twice before parting with yours.

Loving the Maxi! I remember one of the IT staff at school had a 'thing' for Maxis and for a while rolled around in a seriously rotten orange HL, which still sticks in the mind.

Moving on to organs (yes, it is impossible to avoid double-entendre) I mainly play reed organs- here's a repost of a pic of mine:

Which pales into comparison compared to this, the Grandaddy of Mason & Hamlins, which I had the honour of playing once:

The only 'real' organs I play on a semi-regular basis is the tiny 1857 chamber organ in a local church- one manual, 3 stops. Whilst at university I was able to have a go on their 3-manual Harrison & Harrison which was an awesome experience.

I did buy it on a whim as it was exactly the same age, colour and spec as the one my parents had when they married. Unfortunately is has been welded, along one seal and there is a bit of rust on it.I do enjoy driving it though, it really brings a smile to my face. But I think it does need quite a bit spent on it.Peter.

That looks lovely, really nice condition. I have yet to play a reed organ, but that is about to change as a village church in deepest Worcestershire has asked me to play for them at the end of April. Apparently it is quite a monster with two manuals and an electric blower. That three manual one looks a real monster too, I never realised that you could get reed organs with pedal boards?!Never played a Harrison and Harrison, think the nearest is Coventry Cathedral. We have boring Nicholsons mainly around here!Peter.

Thats why I got mine, it was one of 4 cars we owned when my mum died. I got the exact colour and spec. What I didn't expect was to have all 4 at the same time, so joining it was a 105e Anglia, Mk1 Cooper S and a Bond Equipe GT 2ltr. I would have another ADO16 at the drop of a hat though now I've finally had the one I wanted.

Driven/ridden in loads of ADO 16s when they were new and new-ish and I loved them. So did Joe Public because they were Britain's best sellers for a few years.
