Continuing with the Cheap Chinese Diesel heater installation

Fil had done about 5 installs before into camper vans and an ambulance.
Plus he has repaired a few.
So he knows his way around them.

So we needed a table to mount the heater on, some holes in the wall and a larger diesel container.

Have a few pics.

Video published on my YouTube channel.

I will post it in a bit.

I started carving a Celtic Cross today.

Unfortunately it had ideas of its own and broke itself unceremoniously.

George was hanging around as always.

Good security

Diesel install is looking good. I've got the same fuel filter/ water separator. I like the 12v transformer (mine runs off a £12 v oddly sized 4 yr old ECP battery). Without wanting to tell you how to suck eggs that green fuel line isn't supposed to be very good. Can you confirm that @cobblers?

I've some of the hard white fuel line you can have free of charge. Might not be long enough but it's cheap to buy if required.

Fil is back tomorrow.

We are redoing the diesel pump, air intake and exhaust.  Plus a new fuel line like you described.

Also putting wifi all over my property as reception sucks, even indoors.

The air intake and exhaust are difficult to seal even with perfect fitting clamps. I used a small amount of exhaust paste in the end. Good to hear you are going with the upgraded fuel pipe. Overall these heaters are brilliant. Oh, a carbon monoxide detector is a nice to have, only a tenner. Or I have one FOC if you want it.

May all your WiFi be crystal clear on the morrow.

Yep, you need the fuel line to be the 2mm bore nylon stuff really, for a few reasons.

Short term, the green 4mm bore stuff is a pain in the arse, if you ever run it out of fuel it's an absolute task to pull enough fuel through it because of the sheer volume of liquid in the pipes - there's four or five times as much fuel to drag through to get it going again.

Medium term (a few months) it'll go stiff and start sucking air in around all the joints making the heater hard to start now and again.

Long term (under a year) the green pipe will just fall to pieces and piss diesel out.

Fuel pipe was a short short term solution as Fil had left the hard stuff on the kitchen table when he came.
He had mentioned all the points @cobblers and @auntiemaryscanary mentioned.

As for the wifi…….

The bastard service that is Openreach or in my case NoBloodyReach  and currently EE are ultra shite.
EE with promises of fiber that I have heard for 4 years and Openreach who could install overland fiber, continue to stress me.

I actually can’t have a Teams or similar job interview because of the spectacularly shit non service I have.

i cannot even watch YouTube here on my telly without buffering or loading stalling. Often it just logs out.

And my work is mostly home based now.

Indoors, I actually cannot use my phone in the back bathroom.

Fingers crossed.

Slightly better weather yesterday.

Another hugely productive and entertaining day spent with @sparkplug  for company and doing a shedload of work.

Diesel heater reinstalled and working beautifully.

Photos and a video to follow for those interested in this revision.

BONUS INSTALLATION: Remote WiFi installed down in the woodwork shed after trying it in various locations.

Fil did a load of work on the system to create a seamless connection from the house to the garage and carport.

Historically I had almost non existent internet and WhatsApp down at the shop.

Now we are Rocking

Thanks Fil.

If you WFH doesn't a starlink make sense?

Problem lies in the setup cost.

And no company will pay for my Starlink.

So I’m not putting it in for myself.

I know absolutely nothing about internet and broadband.

Fil posted these comments on my thread on UKGSER forum.

All done at zero cost from bits that my old work were throwing in the bin....

Of course it would help if Rian had more than 3Mbps WiFi to start with - but the powerline adapters used were FOC from his provider to try to help address the issue - so a win there too.

Being the geek that I am, I went off to the Ofcom Broadband Checker tool as I was sure it must be possible to find a better provider for him but....

Screenshot-2025-01-27-at-13-20-11.png

Ouch!

Need to do some more research and maybe sort out an LTE solution for him. That's for another day though....

It was a good day and I'm chuffed to bits with what we came up with between us. The result is 100% Grizz and fits in perfectly.

Functional enough, safe enough and 100% grin factor.

Life is good™

And also this

Hmm...

Looks like Three or O2 might be contenders.

Screenshot-2025-01-27-at-13-25-13.jpg

Now if only I had a Three 5G LTE router and external antenna to test it with (ironically I had that in the van yesterday, but time had run out and I hadn't looked into any of this)

Would be really interesting to see what speeds we could get on that and the cost of setup / running v what Rian's currently paying for shockingly poor service.

Alternative of course would be sticking a Starlink up, and spreading the cost with a few of the neighbours... Might be a bit too complicated though.

External 5G antenna might well sort you, worth testing if one can be borrowed and tested with a telescopic mast. Do you get better/any mobile reception upstairs or in the attic if you have one?

Yes

Super shit mobile phone reception here.

Better upstairs.

A quick bit of “ upholstery “ for the diesel heater pump and filter housing.

The knife Fil @sparkplug gifted me was working well.

Revised and refitted the diesel heater to function much more as it had been planned for.

Moved the electric pump and filter outside, onto a ppst and surrounded by a 300mm or 12” inner diameter pipe of about 18” or 45mm
Then added a reasonably silent, padded lid to it.

Now ypu cannot hear it at all.

Thrre is one small job legt and that will be to route the air intake filter outside as you can hear it sucking air.

The actual diesel heater is silent once you have started it up.

Video of a few things done.

I am really pleased with the final second version of this heater.

It is also super efficient in heating this 25 square meter or 75 square foot space.

Insulation clearly works well.

So on revision of the heater installation I realised we should have mounted the pump outside.
The resonance of the shed with a raised floor unfortunately was worse than expected.

The exhaust manifold is a tongue in cheek application.

Thanks to Fil @sparkplug for not just installing but also researching and advising on this build.
And then going even further when it came to helping me get WiFi down at the bottom of the garden into the garage, ‘Lil Shed, carport and woodwork shop .

Payback is never easy but Paying it Forward is.

So hopefully we are all square.
