If anyone has a 5 series stashed away or maybe even a 7, I have a good friend who wants one for an everyday driver. Needs to be be roadworthy(ish) and cheap, and preferably south east England. We can sort out minor issues but I'm not after a restoration project.

Good choice. Fine cars. Both series' are bomb proof, and incredibly well made. The e34 5 is more involving to drive than the e39 5, and the 7's are just like magic carpets.523's, 528's and 728's between 95 and early 98 need to be checked for nikasil engine blocks (wouldent bother me now), but they can still prove problematic and cost a lot of money to replace if they fail. And e34 V8's and e32 V8's are also nikasil engines. The e39 540i V8 is the weapon of choice with 290bhp and a shed load of torque. Good ones can be had for under 3k these days! 8)

I think he only has 500 or 600 quidhis Rover seems to be expiring in multiple ways simultaneouslydead alternator, badly knocking camshaft, blowing exhaust, and he tells me it has rear suspension problems

600 will pull a half decent earlyer non vanos 24v e34, and an e32 7 12v

Will it? I've been looking for a good E32 735i and they all seem to be mental money lately - if they're not utterly fubar.

When I spoke to him yesterday he said his preference would be a 525. I think he knows a lot more about beemers than me

Your right, it wont. E32's have rocketed in value, e34's are still filthy cheap though!!

I reckon hes gona need a bit more cash for a e34 aswell though. The 525i 24v is a rather capable car and the engine is widely regarded as one of BMW's finest

My sister's e34 525 is still going strong at 218k.

Only just run in at those miles :)

Mine is very close to 300k. They built them properly back then.I would give the E38 and E39 a swerve. Nice cars but they're not really DIY fixable. Best is a manual 525i 24v. £600 should secure a very tidy one. E32 730i six cylinders are cheap as well, but I'm surprised E32 735i's are 'valuable'. Lots are being shipped out to Iraq I'm told.

Could recoup some of the money flogging the plate to an Alpina owner too!

steer clear of E39's or any with the alloy 6cyl engine. Serious overheating issues over 60k. UNLESS they have had an aftermarket waterpump upgrade in which case they should be OK - BMW will not tell you about this problem. I speak from bitter experience with a '96 523i eating an engine at 62k and then again at 78k....the water pump impellor blades are plastic - they sheer off over time and block the cooling capilliaries in the engine - the first you will know about it is a cooked head and as they are alloy they brew up splendidly.go for an E34 with the cast iron straight 6 - prettier car with better rustproofing as well

Posted

You were unlucky - the plastic impeller pumps can do up to 14 years. Best is to put a steel (not iron) impeller pump in. I've see countless old E39's with 150-200k but you're right, once they've been cooked the engine is fucked. The E34 is coming out of the Council phase and a really clean one on standard wheels which no KOTCE* stick on tat is a really good looking car.* King Of The Council Estate. Used to drive nuffink but 2.8i Ghia X Grannies, now drives a BeeEmm, innit?

With the cowling off when replacing my fan I noticed the front of the radiator was virtually covered in leaves, twigs and other assorted crap.I can only assume the mechanical viscous fan combined with the electric air-con fan creates some sort of vacuum between the the air-con rad and the cooling rad.If this is the case then that's another case for overheating.Anyway with everything in bits it was easy enough to lift the rad up and away from the air-con rad and I just hoovered all the crap up.

Sorry, my mate Robbie says he's now keeping the beemer and selling the Minor, so if anyone wants a late four-door located in Brighton lemme know.....

E34 sixes also have the plastic impeller. The M50 engine is a tough old boot, I've had a few and one is still going strong with 276k on it
