Road trip! Road trip!

Needing some luck wished my way...

Tonight, five of us are boarding a fully laden 1979 Land Rover 109 station wagon and heading for France. On the back is a massive trailer with a short wheelbase Landy and a lot of spares. We're delivering the shortie and spares to a friend of ours in Charente, 600 odd miles down.

Last time we attempted this - a year ago - the same 109's engine exploded and to cut a long story short, we had to shoot back to Calais in our pal's Renault 5 and hitch onto the ferry to get back. We then returned a month later in a 1955 Series 1 LR with a new engine in the back, fitted it, drove them both home. Hopefully this time won't be quite so dramatic and this time we have DECENT breakdown cover...

The plan is for three of us to finishing loading the 109 late this afternoon and then set off (from Boston, Lincs). Meanwhile, I'm whizzing down to Worthing in Sussex to collect my pal Jon, in the Audi. No probs I think, I'll just check over the engine first...

Unfortunately the cable-tie bodged bonnet release gave up the ghost completely and I've just spent a hour in the pissing rain fighting to remove the grill, headlight trip and one headlight to get it open. And I've got a cold. Wish us luck and if you see this blue one vvvvvv chugging along, wave...!!

Great stuff. A true Autoshite style road trip.

Superb stuff...passengers may find the roof-rack more comfortable, less noisey and probably less draughty too.

Made it!

Apart from a wiper arm (passenger side, thankfully) falling off, old 'Humph' did us proud and returned a stonking 21mpg...!!1!!!!

To prevent us going totally bonkers on the motorway we devised some 'entertainment' to confuse onlooking French folk
