The family Hertz are looking at booking our family holiday for the Whitsun Holiday at the end of May. First holiday with a child at school and it's trousers down time I'm afraid but we are stuck to dates now We fancy Devon or Cornwall but have not a clue where to stay. Anyone recommend a nice site or holiday home they have stayed at or know someone who rents theirs? We have trawled all the websites and some look good but are not when you get there so any info would be great. Looking for a Static or cabin or house etc within reach of the beach/town  Any help/suggestions welcome!

Croyde is nice and this holiday park is right near the beach. Fab walks along the cliff path too.

(Ruda is the park in Croyde)

We have stayed in nice places in Colyton (nr Seaton) and High Bickington (Nr Barnstaple) but they aren't that close to the beach.

I was born in Bideford in north Devon, although I now live in Hertfordshire. The current Mrs. H and I stayed in a lovely B & B in Westleigh, which is a microscopically small village about 3 miles outside Bideford, with a great pub! A HUGE cooked breakfast to build you up for the day, handy for the beach at Westward Ho! and both Bideford and Barnstaple towns. Instow's dead pretty (as is Appledore, across the eastury) and there's a fantastic walk along the disused railway along the river! Or hire some bikes from the bike hire place at Barnstaple station-the route's practically flat, as it's an old track bed. Sorry if this sounds a bit like a tourist advert, but I was born there, so I may be biased. As for beers; there are several micro breweries making some decent beers, and the local cider's excellent! Need to know more-pm me & I'll pass on names and addresses....

^WHS^ Westleigh is lovely and would be well worth a look. Trouble with South Devon and its proximity to the English Riviera is that it is just so busy during the summer months, roads are usually chocca etc. As said above North Devon is probably a much better bet, although there are some little gems hidden around the Devon/Cornwall border. :)

My brother rents out a static holiday caravan in a holiday park in Challaborough, South Devon (in the South Hams). Nice part of Devon, park is on the beach and is good for kids. Also has bar on the beachfront. Will email details if you fancy it.

Is Torbay really that bad :?::lol:

Yes it is, unfortunately it's been ruined by an influx of Mancunian and Scouse drug dealers  Not quite the 'English Riviera' anymore....Challaborough as recomended by Carlo is a nice spot, tends to be our Beach of choice when weather permits, it's only a 20 minute drive for me.

Yes it is, unfortunately it's been ruined by an influx of Mancunian and Scouse drug dealers  Not quite the 'English Riviera' anymore....Thing is its sold as the English Riviera but its a shit hole... crap and litter everywhere and the buildings are all grotty. Even the beaches arent that nice. Most of the shops are shit....even the good old nightclubs are....shit.....any car that aint new is either chavved up or a nail....unless a pensioner has owned it......then theres no clutch. The roads are appalling and are so choked in the summer that you are better off walking. Some nice fanny about though....

Stay out of Torbay....its shit :)

How dare you, I lived there for seven years and its not shit it is a fucking craphole, tis the arsehole of the south coast. I think Hudson has summed up Torbay perfectly hence why I left.I stayed at this place which is near Lands End (do not ever go to Lands End, it is a disgrace that someone has turned it into a shithole tourist shopping area) I stayed in a campervan but they do statics and the area is very nice and the campsite was brilliant with nice owners.http://www.lowertreave.co.uk/Areas in Devon that are nice-Dartmouth (used to live there) very nice small harbour town as is Salcombe but it does get busy.Cornwall, well anywhere along the coast really, Alog the south coast nicer you have St Michaels Mount, Mousehole and along the top you have St Ives which is really nice and much further up towards Devon you have Port Isaac which is where they filmed Doc Martin. Avoid Newquay as its an overated shithole and I find Perranporth boring.

Hey, give this lot a try: http://www.helpfulholidays.com/

They rent out houses and cottages in Devon / Cornwall and really are good. They are truly helpful people too; managed to sort me a midweek to midweek break one christmas when all the other companies would only do a full Saturday to Saturday week or nothing.

For anyone else planning a holiday to Devon/Cornwall this year, I can recommend http://www.johnfowlerholidays.com/page/home.html particularly their Widemouth Bay Caravan Park in North Cornwall. A stones throw from Bude, which is quite surf orientated and also The Atlantic Highway, meaning you can go north & south easily & quite quickly. The beach is nice & the kids can go out bodyboarding with the reassurance of lifeguards on season.

The local villages are scenic, there are some great roads if you've got something nice to drive on them, though plenty of tourist drivers in the summer.

This'll be our sixth time to Cornwall this year. Plenty of old chod still on the road to spot too!
