I have one fixture that'll run them so they're being kept because they work...

A box arrived!

What's in it?

Sport Fury outer tail lights! They smell like Texas.

Scrub scrub.

Yeah, that'll be good enough. The chrome matches the ones I have for the trunk lid at least. (Aka terrible).

That's about as good as they're gonna get.

They do at least line up with the inners.

Got those to clean up now.

Shiny shiny.

There's a NOS inner L/H red lens on eBay right now for the low, low price of $119.

Moved the car.

20220722_175023.thumb.jpg.3cae3b036d17e6434aa93adf4d68f5db.jpg

Bought some bulbs and screws. Turns out the eBay crapshoot lot I bought was 3 left hand side light buckets. Not too bad, a spare is useful. The R/H lower is just held in with one screw.

Onward and upward.

Didn't realize the grill was stainless. Thought it was aluminum.

20220723_152434.thumb.jpg.a1a77693cb8e297d3df05b367187594c.jpg

Took two hours to get an acceptable gloss on the headlight surround. Hard metal!

Stuck the ass end back on the car.

Yup. Okay, now I remember why I bought it.

Someone sent me the service manual today so I went look up the VIN.

Engine code E, big block 361.

Hm. So it had a 5.9 in it from new, the 5.2 isnt original.

With the car outside I have been able to stand back and look at a few things critically from the side.

First, I noticed that the H was on upside down.

20220726_171253.thumb.jpg.8a38bcee3874cc013d92a52a89fdaf18.jpg

Then I took a look at the drip rail, which I'd had a bit of a go at but was noticably bent in two places still.

20220726_190001.thumb.jpg.a21ddc0670533dd04c1ea4ff7e04fe04.jpg

So that got beaten with hammers because it stopped raining long enough to stand outside and do it. There's a small hole at the base so I'll have to attack it with a wire wheel and see how much of it turns into dust.

This is the trim that should fit that gutter.

I have time with pliers and hammers in my immediate future.

Looks like it should clip back on securely though. It was also a pain to polish. The chrome on the car is all pretty good quality stuff though. Up under the windows it's gone rusty, might be able to salvage that though.

Good news.

Still can't weld for toffee but at least the machine works.

More good news. Just found the missing reverse light lens. Needs some repair but that's something I don't have to scour eBay for now.

Yet more good news!

I found my turn signal stalk!

20220728_212110.thumb.jpg.a6afe6428a5c1440d86c7395fcfac1e4.jpg

It buffed up acceptably.

Gauges today, because I fancied a change.

The cluster in the car was dirty, and the spare set had been submerged in rainwater after the storm.

20220729_170125.thumb.jpg.a630eda89c9218766d324895792e091d.jpg

Cleaned up and repaired the PCB.

20220729_114300.thumb.jpg.8af0859c723c98b89b08c9d728e8cd63.jpg

Tested the gauges. Even the submerged ones still worked.

20220729_170112.thumb.jpg.d0aa86e7771f32700c75cf3d86180d6b.jpg

Painted the needles orange because they were all faded.

20220729_173131.thumb.jpg.b397949597b8f0069896f4aa577696a0.jpg

Cleaned up and painted the mask because it was rusty, and polished the lens.

20220729_143520.thumb.jpg.39991af78c76e96acf00d247ff55d177.jpg

Found the handle for the parking brake release.

20220729_185907.thumb.jpg.751218972d8fb06305f15c582cab939a.jpg

The beige parts on the surround were originally chromed. That's out of my price range so the shiniest silver the store had to sell went on in lieu. I think the surround, which was originally matte silver can go a pale gray and the ribbed center section can go back flat black. Should look nice.

I dug the flooded speedometer out of storage, mostly to see how bad it was.

20220730_151746.thumb.jpg.f1b5bc3d5bb110227736316b0b49df9c.jpg

Certainly wasn't good. Dirty and rusty, the mechanism seized solid and the plastics cracked and crazed. Still, took it apart and cleaned it up.

20220730_222911.thumb.jpg.52c2d774613bb1304cee8af20ba9a03d.jpg

Looks ok, freshened up. The inner edge of the bezel is too shiny left in silver, I'll have to wait for the paint to fully harden and then paint it pale gray.

20220730_221018.thumb.jpg.b28416a489316a51553af20bc05d57d3.jpg

Cleaned the circuit board and tested the lights. That's quite nice to look at.

It's certainly the largest speedometer I've ever owned.

They've come up quite nice haven't they.... Gotta be a pleasant outcome.

Whats the overall plan for this? Going all shiny and full repaint eventually or get it running and a rolling resto type future?

Right now the plan is "not a too shabby driver".  Bordering the line between Vice Grip Garage and Roadkill.

Bought a cheap lens at Napa ($1.79).

20220731_160846.thumb.jpg.57759efaccb3eaa2d253d431eec9f541.jpg

Choppity chop with the Dremel, stuck in place and sealed with silicone. Gaps painted with red lacquer.

20220731_174653.thumb.jpg.3091042057b5fe42d6a423f8f1a005b6.jpg

Imperfect? Yes. Good enough from 20 feet? Yes.

20220731_182254.thumb.jpg.93741d7b76da7e9ab45cd778ed8fc0a4.jpg

Both look ok now. Red LEDs fitted to them and they'll be reet.

Next task, investigate this switch, which makes click-ping-scrape noises if the knob is pulled. It has no detents and I guess doesn't work because someone has wired a toggle switch in under the dash on a length of speaker wire, which appears to turn the lights on.

20220731_193050.thumb.jpg.6bf7518dc307f05cea51c93f006cdbdc.jpg

It's also bent in the most curious fashion. I think someone tried to remove the shaft without depressing the release pin.

Nope.

Inside is not very happy.

20220801_095138.thumb.jpg.bf6718e7e21ed56f25bd36753e183b73.jpg

That piece isn't meant to be welded to that piece and this piece isn't meant to be in two pieces.

Catastrophic failure. New switch time.

Pulled the wiper switch out to test it.  It appears to do everything correctly- that is, in an overly complicated fashion.

20220801_111656.thumb.jpg.0de677ecbb83c6530684e013b8b1b015.jpg

Switched on, it's connected to run the motor forward. It's also infinitely variable in speed. Switched off it runs the motor backwards to the parked position.

20220801_121345.thumb.jpg.083754a9af6e3ca4a762b0e98231c9fb.jpg

Cleaned the chrome up at least. Need to source a motor, which I'm sure will be wonderfully expensive.

Still, needed to come off, managed to get the other part of the turn signal lever out, but as seems to be common with this car, the switch is broken.

Pulled the speedometer out for better access. The dash looks quite spartan now.
