Nope, the tube doesn't fit but the dipstick itself does. That'll work, calibrated from measurements taken by another Plymouth owner tonight, very kindly.

Ahh nothing  like fitting the little chrome finishing touches - a man after my own heart  anything to avoid fighting rust!

 

Sound absolutely  brilliant and  is looking like a car now and not tetnus/mental breakdown in waiting.

It still looks like that underneath because I still haven't fixed the rust. That's on the to-do list, but the repair panels are not cheap for this car. I'm not making my own where you can see them because I'm crap at that.

I hear you Phil,  I've just spent an hour and half trying to work on the mustang and   well.. cold, damp, awkward aceess - the Jack and axle stand are where I want to be for comfortable access/not eating all the grinder sparks. Soooo... it's been sacked off  till tommorrow.

I had a more positive morning today.

Item one, a brand new O-ring seal for the dipstick tube.

That was fitted in place, didn't snag up which is good. (No idea why the photo is upside down).

Figured it would be rude not to check we have all three forward gears. We do!

Shined up the chrome. Looks a bit more presentable though I still need to find another headlight bucket.

Went look on eBay this afternoon for trim pieces.

Discovered the cost of good hood ornaments, so went dig the broken remains of mine out of the garage and set about making a screw post for it.

A little bit of Plymouth work today.

Number one, can we spot the cylinder that's not firing properly?

Number two, a battery. Not for this and it's old and janky and not meant for this application. But it works and it was free.

Third, coolant hoses. Obviously nothing on the shelf that is designed to fit. Particularly as this is an early radiator and a late engine - hence the long route to the wrong side of the engine at the bottom. But, it appears to kinda work. I need intake manifold gaskets and a few more hoses to complete that. Freeze plugs need doing (that's one thing I should have done before putting the engine in...)

Spent a chunk of today that I'll never get back screwing about with the original carburetor.

I need to get some rubber bungs and a new pipe to go to the fuel pump. Neither of the carbs want to work properly with just a gravity feed.

Got a working battery that'll crank the engine more than 4 times before it dies.

Bought a bit of pipe and joined up the fuel pump. Definitely needs gaskets. It likes to run now it gets fuel.

Big blue flames from the exhaust.

Bypass hose arrived in. Turned out to be wrong. Seems about par for the course on this engine.

Exchange was made for a 90° elbow which was cut down to size. Works well enough. Heater bypassed also. 

It leaks from every available orifice.

Had the same with "Party Fears Two", by the Associates ( from an old BBC radio show on R4).

 

The car is continuing at a slow pace. I'm trying to do something to it each day, even if it's just something small, like lately.

Decided to try mount the alternator this afternoon to see if it would fit or line up with the pulleys.

Turns out I'm missing some hardware (shims and spacers and stuff) . I'll have to order that.

Decided to see if I could make it run any better. The timing had shifted and I hadn't noticed; reset it by ear and now it idles smoothly (well, mostly). The idle mix set up a bit better and it's something close to acceptable.

I'll have to put the timing light on it and see how far off the mark it is.

Timing mark doesn't line up with anything at all.

I'll just time it by ear.

I reckon with the different properties of modern fuel compared to when these cars were new timing by ear is the only way to go.

No, this is small block.

 

Big block isn't too hard, just need the engine, transmission and mounts.

The pulleys now can coexist but none of the grooves line up.

no its hnnng but different (quish it together lol ) - nowt to do with big block :D

when 318 sounds dirty like that doesnt need one anyway :D
