Okey doke,

As part of my shite kull I am looking to get rid of my 144 Auto deluxe

I bought this one from a chap on Retro rides last month when pissed, it had been languishing in his garden in Bristol for several months having been used as a daily driver by him last winter. I ended up buying it with a bottle of wine inside me and now I have it, and like it, I have some serious restoration repairs to fund on my 960 Turbo, 1990 Golf convertible and my 1955 Moggy so I have to be honest with myself and ask whether or not I a/ need this beast and b/ have spread my resources too thin? So, I'm offering it up for sale here - I don't need to but I am being realistic.

It's a 1972 (free tax) Volvo 144 Deluxe

110000k on the clock

MOTs going back to 1992 - last 15 years the car has covered about 15k since 1993

taxed till November 2010

MOT till 27th November 2009

The car is original except for the following:

14" 244 steel wheels rather than 15" 144 ones

An SU Carb sourced from a Rover P6

A K&N air filter as the Volvo air intake won't fit the SU's side intake - I suspect the K&N dumps a wee bit too much air into the carb and the car cold do with a good tune

so - the good bits:

solid body

reasonable paint

95% of trim there

starts and pulls well

completed 150 miles from Brisol to Herts no problem and am considering driving her to edinburgh tomorrow

what needs doing:

when I got her the previous owner had broken the indicator stalk and switch - I drove her back from Briston sans indicators - that was fun! and have sourced a spare but as an emergency have replaced the stalk with a 3 way rocker switch for the indicators and have moved the headlight full beam to a rocker on the main switch gear panel - this means that at least the car can be driven safely at night and in traffic.

she needs a good tune

she is running a bit hot - the heaters must be turned up to cool her down just now - I was going to flush the system and will try and do this. The radiator looks OK bust I suspect it hasn't been flushed out for several years - the car does not overheat however provided the heaters are on

the off side front brake is grabbing and sticking - you can hear it whine and braking hard the car will grab to the left

sometimes she doesn't like to start when hot - condensation in the carb - essentially she needs a damn good service

the interior is in good nick, no broken plastics with the exception of a single 4" suncrack on the top of the dash

the rear mister switch and the hazard swithces have both lost their holding clips and are loose - however, I suspect both are knackered anyway as they also act as the relay for those functions so could probably do with being replaced - especially the hazards

the front seats both have vinyl damage - the passenger onehas several cracks - not drastic yet the driver one has a split - the car comes with a spare seat in reasonable contition with the exception of a split seam. The vinyl damage is age and sun related

the back seat is good

the carpets are good

the last chap did all the welding required including floor pans, sills and boot (see pics) - the car could do with a good rustproffing before the winter.

The car is based in Harpenden, Herts.

i was looking to get my money back but I can't be arsed MOT'ing her and i need to get rid of her so am offering her to fellow collectors of kit for the bargain basement price of:

£175.00 as seen

yeah, I know - torsten will give me a roasting for flogging it cheap but I'm pulling 60 hour weeks and 4500 miles a month just now - I work for a food company and obviously Christmas is a busy time...I think with a bit of TLC and a decent service, carb tinker, sort the grabbing caliper - you could get yourself a decent tax free classic toy- LOWUR IT N RAD ALLOYZ GR8 4 DRIFTIN

I had to strip one of these down years ago for a respray, It was a 1977 Silver Jubile model with blue interior, Looked nice after painting it and refitting all the trim back on, drove very nice as well from what i remember. Not that this has much to do with yours...

£175  Holy religious things that better find a home very soon as it's an absolute gift at that price.

And it might be too tempting for a banger racer as well at that price... :?

OOF! That's fantastic, you've been hiding that well! Lovely colour too!Mark.

Don't think there's much chance of it getting banger raced. If whitevanman doesn't have it, it can come and keep my 164 company.

That sounds like a fair £175 of anybody's money to me, looks a nice old thing.

I've got a real thing for 70's European saloons in orange at the moment. But sadly no finances.......

I would love an old tax free beast like that to drive around in.

If I had that I would lob in an injected 2.0 from a Torslanda and do 25k in it in a year getting 30+ mpg. Marvellous!

It might be too tempting for someone with an Amazon who needs a new engine :shock:It's got a B20 as well! I am very very very tempted by this. Let me know if the sale falls through. PM'd.

Ah well. Someone from the VOC would have had it off me, so it wouldn't have been fragged. Nice one WVM.

Very pleased (if a bit jealous :P ) that it's found a good home :D
