Cashing in tax/sorning car - what do I do??

I know there is a form to download/printout and it says as long as it's posted with the taxdisc before the end of the month thats it. The postal strike is the thing that concerns me really, if I go in the Post Office on Saturday and make sure they print out a label with the 31st on will that be o.k? If it's just a stamp how can it was sent before the end of the month (if it's not postmarked on Sat) or should I post it earlier to be sure?

It said on the news Special Delivery was still getting thorough, cos they use a different bit of the service. Might be worth paying a bit more. you can only claim back whole months, so if it gets to them very early next month you will loose that month too. Is it worth it for you?

As above, use Special Delivery, should get there that way. Costs a bit extra but saves you the hassle if they don't get it in time via normal post.

I was under the impression that as long as it was in the post before the end of the previous month then you would get the next month back.i.e - posted 31st October, I still get all of November back - is that right?

:lol:this is from the form so if I post it Friday or Saturday and the PO use a printed out stamp I should be o.k I think?

To get a refund for each full calendar month left on the tax disc, you must post this filled-in form to us, or hand it in at a DVLA localoffice, before the first day of the month you want the refund from. For example, if your tax disc runs out at the end of August and youhave three full months left, then you must apply before the 1st of June.

Nice one Pog! I'd follow this up with some kind of "Postman Scab" type song, but I can't be bothered. Make your own - early in the morning, just as day is dawning, his windows get bricked and he gets a nasty phonecall. Something along those lines, bit more slick though, put the effort in, it'll work out alright. Use one of those rhyming dictionaries.Geezer - I reckon the DVLA will refund the tax when they feel like it, even if it's on account of delays on their side, so don't get your hopes up too much! Utterly unfair, but it would remain consistent with the rest of their "customer service".

Can you try taking it into your local DVLA centre? Special delivery might be okay, but i would have thought its on the date received not posted. Would never send anything to the DVLA without at least recorded as they lose everything. I am still the registered keeper on at least 2 cars i sold over 10 years ago.

Was going to say that, totally agree, they will refund you when they feel like it (or not at all) otherwise.

Hi all, for what it's worth, when I sorn my fleet, I do it via a Post Office, and ask for "proof of posting" certificate, which the lovely post-mistress(!) down in darkest Cornwall completes, at NO CHARGE, then off it goes with a 1st class stamp, via the normal postbox.Swansea take about 3 weeks to post a refund czech, and as I always tax my shite for a year, but only use it 3 months of that ( I point blank refuse to pay an extra 10% charge which does not get refunded, if you do a 6-month licence), I follow the status of each vehicle on the DVLA website. It takes well over a month before it shows "sorn not due".The only fly in the ointment is that the czech has to go to a colleagues address (thanks, Brian!) as they will not post it out here on the Dark side of the Moon. Hope that's of some help.....

:? Surely the 10% more it costs to have a 6 month disc is offset by the part month you loose cashing it in?

Aha ! you cannot "lose" a part month, can you; even if you post your disc to DVLA on the 21st, for instance, you vehicle is still taxed to the end of that month, isn't it ? Of course it is !The only thing being you will not be able to display that disc if it is speeding by post-office snail to Swansea, but a ANPRS camera cannot see that.Plus, with the advent of scanners, copiers, et al = problem solved.Wake up , Swansea, and put the road tax on petrol /fuel, and you'll make even more out of us !!! 8)

I meant loose financially, if you say you are offended by the higher price of 6 months, but regularly cash the tax in, you loose (financially) the month you cash it in, as they only refund in whole months. Doesn't the lower price of 12 months (per month) cancel out the partial month's loss? Also isn't there a fee for cashing it in?

Good point that. It is cheaper that way. Should get yourself on Countdown Fred.I was not aware of a fee when i did it, but did not do any maths. Glad this thread came up as i had forgotten i had the cheque in my wallet still along with a cheque from my mum. Over £130 all in. Result. Might get myself a beer tonight.

You only lose a partial month if you cash it in mid way throught he month, hence my original question about posting on the 31st.I will have had use of the car all this month, send off for refund on the 31st for Nov/Dec etc...Nothing mentioned about a cash in fee anywhere.

Well I can't see how on earth they can bring in a charge for parking something you own on your own property or land.

If he did the tax for 6 months and still cashed it in wouldnt he, buy your theory, still lose the month he cashes it in?

yeah good point.

I knew there was something about a fee, it's if you are not sending the tax disc back

The amount you’ll be refunded

A refund is paid for each full month left to run on the tax disc at the time you apply. For example, if your tax disc expires at the end of September and you apply during July you'll receive a refund for two months – August and September.

If you have a six-month tax disc you paid an extra ten per cent handling charge when you bought it. This is not included as part of your refund.

If you don’t have a tax disc to send back, an administration fee of £7 will be taken away from the amount refunded to you. The refund will be made payable to the person named on the application form. The name should match exactly what’s on the vehicle registration certificate.

A refund can not be backdated.

as for keeping the SORN free and people not wanting to pay for something they are not using, if they set a fee of £10 it would still be cheaper than getting an £80 fine, and I think they are moving towards this....

If you ever do send the tax back in with the form always remember to put an X in the SORN box. For various reasons (mostly me not planning my life very well and having too many cars) I've had to do this three times this year and one time I forgot to tick the box. Hence I got a snotty letter back saying I hadn't SORNed my car and did I know I could be fined £5k and sent to prison for this - more than you get for rape isn't it? Anyway that delayed the refund and I lost two months :evil:Just taxed the Violet when it ran out at the end of September then realised actually it would make more sense to lay that up for winter and put the 323 back on the road, so I lost a month's tax handing it back again a few days later  Would have done them both if I wasn't currently slightly hard up. That'll teach me to think on

DVLA tried to introduce a SORN fee(£4 from memory) to cover ''admin costs'' but it was quickly howled down as a Possession tax - a route we really dont want to go down.Give it another year or two though- like the Lisbon Treaty, give it a new name and try again.

I am convinced they will try to charge for the SORN at some point in the future, they are just trying to get us into the habit of clicking online in the comfort of our own homes then they will hit us with a charge, which will be a good deal when compared to a fine. Joe Public will follow on, just watch em. Then be prepared for the flurry of ads on ebay that say 'since the SORN charge came in I can no longer justify keeping 6 cars so this has to go' ect ect..... Old cars got rid of and money coming in in one stroke!

Just an update, cheque received today for £126.66 (for the 8 months remaining) and the sorn also received stating the car is sorn from the 30th October (the day the form was posted) Pretty good/quick service from the DVLA I thought.Still pissed off with the fact it cost £65 in road tax to do about 500 miles though but not much I can do about that.
