Paint reaction?

Recommended Posts

I had the car painted almost four years ago, it had zero rust then and has zero now. It never has bird shit left on it and was ceramic coated last year. I just washed the dust off it earlier on, and was greeted with this.

Any ideas? I can’t feel it and I guess it is under the paint. I’ll remove the headlining to be sure all is well on the underside of the roof skin.

It seems weird for this to be happening now? I would have expected issues like this, sooner. I’ve never seen anything like this, before. There’s a few little spots (and the huge one) on the roof. I can’t see it anywhere else.

What’s the opinion, some form of delayed paint reaction? Ceramic failing?

Looks a bit like when diamond cut alloy wheels corrode

Looks like a splash, as if something has dripped on it.  Are the other marks following the airflow on the roof? Perhaps something splashed on it last time you drove it and its taken a while to show up?  The irridescence is peculiar too.

Aye, the old white worm. I thought similar.

Unless it was parked on deck on the Nostromo, I can’t think what could have dripped on it. It’s been in a slightly leaky garage over winter, so dust and a little water is all it has seen.

The marks don’t follow the airflow at all. They seem to be entirely random.

Call it patina and learn to embrace it.

Not with this one. I have three cars and only one has that position on the fleet.

I would say it was that when the ceramic coating was put on, either the airdryer wasn't working properly or there was a bit of water in the lines when sprayed. It can take years to show up and often does of you keep your car under a cover.

It MIGHT, and you dont have much to lose really, cut out as its under just the top coat.

Try some 1500 paper on a block and see if it releases it. You can go to 1000 grit if you're brave and then buff back or even use a lacquer pen after the top coat is off to get around any of the white bits.

Otherwise, full roof paint sadly.

I thought the ceramic was applied more like a wax, than actually sprayed on with a compressor? I’ve never heard of that application method.

I never keep cars under covers. Too much to go wrong. I try to be careful(!)

Cheers, mate. I reckon I will send the pics to the detailer who applied the coating and see if he has seen anything like it before. I doubt I will have a go myself. Although before coating, if I had the room I would have had a go at wet sanding the whole car.

If this won’t spread or worked, I’ll leave it until he sees it, I think.

Thanks everyone.

Sorry, that should have read lacquer rather than the wax but obvs it's been painted years ago so unlikely.

But cutting back should work although if you're in touch with the guy who did it, try that first.

I wasn’t sure if that’s what you meant, but every day is a school day!

I’ll get in touch with the painter as well. I just hope it doesn’t end up on other panels.
