Old-Skool Diesels Thread

The Ford 1.8TD could be had with an intercooler and 90PS, that's what my Escort had. I found the car pleasant enough to drive but a nightmare to own.

Wasn't the engine in the Hyundai Accent TD a 3-cylinder VM unit? I think it was a 1.5 rather than a 1.7 though.

Jeezus a 3-cyl Hyundai Accent Diesel sounds like a whole new level of utterly mind-boggling shite motoring that i can only dream of. Just the thought of it is stimulating my 'shite glands'.My P100 has no intercooler, and I doubt it is capable of producing 89 bhp. In fact right now its not producing any bhp as it wont start, the shower of shite.

what wrong with the poor beast?

No intakula = 75bhp That must be fairly grim, given that the 89hp one in that Orion thing wasn't very quick. I don't know what they did when they luzzed it into a Focus, cos they go much better. Currently contemplating a TD Fiesta Van, it's not really shite as it's a "51" reg, but should be a good balance between "chugg" and "not being terribly unpleasant", and will at least be better to chuck about / pound the motorway than my skinny-wheeled, over-tall franco-peasant chariot.

the 1.8TD aint a bad engine. Pug derived and its fast enough in most applications....Had a TD fiesta once, about 1994 I think.......feckin' flying machine and 55MPG when ragged.......wish I had it now

What's Pug derived about it? Was the Fiesta TD a homebrew conversion? I don't think they were sold in the UK.

I was always told that it was from a Pug design........never gave it any other thoughtas for the TD Fiesta, it was a factory one we had a couple of them on fleet hire back in the mid 90's

TBH when the escort rusts away and all i am left with is the engine , I intend to turn it 90 degrees and slot it into an old viva. cheap motoringz just need to find the right gearbox.

Type 9 V6 box is best

I didn't think they were sold in the UK, they were definitely available in Europe and marketed as a lukewarm hatch.

I think the only old diesel I've had was this stinky old Patrol...

When I phoned up about the ad, the bloke told me it had been recently repainted, had Recaros and new carpets fitted. Sound great but when I got to Liverpool, I found it actually had one Recaro (passenger side) which was ripped to shreds, the new carpet was some bright blue foam backed house carpet which looked like it had been cut to fit with a hammer and best of all it had indeed been repainted... with the same paint he'd done the outside of his house with  Fortunately it was so cheap I bought it anyway. It was a 3.3 non turbo with a 4 speed. I almost got 70mph downhill out of it on the way home but most of the time it wouldn't do more than 60. These old Patrols feel just like a lorry to drive.

My mate has a 109" Land Rover with the drivetrain out of one of those ^^. It's fantastic!! Not that fast on acceleration but loads of grunt and mated to the LR axles it'll do 80 easily enough.

More 205 n/a praise I'm afraid  Never actually driven a non-turbo before now (my experience of a Mk5 Scrote TD was enough to put me off diesels fullstop for many, many years) but it's incredible just how driveable these things are. Thanks to the looooong gearing, you only really run out of steam in 1st & 2nd - once you're at cruising speed, you can literally dump the throttle in any gear and instantly get bags of torque. Plus, after 120k, mine still starts on the first piston-stroke, even in miserably damp/freezing weather. Bearing in mind its age, there was just no excuse whatsoever for so many other companies to make 90s smokers so utterly crap.

There was a Fester 1.8TD without intercooler sold here, I nearly bought one instead of the 206 but it broke down on the test drive.

It's a shame they didn't add a turbo to the TUD, it would have been a little flier like the Corsa 1.5TD.

I can't find it just now but I think Diesel Car tested a French 106 DTurbo (may have been a Saxo) in the early 90s when the 106 first came out. They suggested it would be superb if brought to the UK but the RHD conversion costs would be too high.
