Volksy Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 they banger raced a Renault 18 over a series and concluded that they should have bought a Cortina to race instead.IIRC the 18 was from the, now infamous, 'Edinburgh on a monkey' article, Renault 14 TL with a boot full of boules FTW!
andrew e Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 I only went once and that was enough! Got a nice AX GT though

Volksy Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 not sure, late 80's early 90's at a guess. I must have it buried somewhere in my fossils loft.
r.welfare Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Sometime between 1987 and 1990 - I had all four of those years, complete sets. Can't remember which issue though.
IanF Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Sometime between 1987 and 1990 - I had all four of those years, complete sets. Can't remember which issue though.I suspect its either 1990-91 as that is the era when I first started picking Car up. In fact, I suspect it may have been the issue with the E-Type on the front (or was that one '92?) Could be earlier though - I use to also flick through my mates dad copies back then too.As an aside, wasn't there an issue where they tested some thing BL - an Allegro VDP maybe - against the then current C segment stuff like Rover 200? Wouldn't mind seeing that again if someones got it to scan.I'd love to have a whole stack of 70's to 90's Car but can neither justify the ebay prices nor the space. If they put them on DVD however...
trigger Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Cheers for that, I'll have a look through them in a minute for that one then.As an aside, wasn't there an issue where they tested some thing BL - an Allegro VDP maybe - against the then current C segment stuff like Rover 200? Wouldn't mind seeing that again if someones got it to scan.Yes there was, I have it, Think they test the Allegro against a Orion 1600E as well, I'll hunt to out and scan it for you this evening if i can.

trigger Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Just scanning it as well speak, It's also competing against a Belmont CDi.Also found the Edinburgh on a monkey issue (Oct 1990) and one where Steve Cropley's 2CV Turbo caught on fire.I'll scan them and post them on here even anyone wants to see them.

Mr_Bo11ox Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Great stuff Trigsbury! Keep an eye open for the 'Buddy Dogs' used car lot job will you? Its Hirst Autos' spiritual parent company. I'd say that was round 1987 sometime.
IanF Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Awesome - haven't seen that for nigh on 18-19 year now.
r.welfare Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Brilliant piece. You can just feel the dripping sarcasm - unusual for them to attribute a particular journo's name to a Giant Test, but I would have guessed Bulgin was behind it.OK, some more Giant Test outcomes to predict now, taken from my (slim) collection of 70's CAR. 1st-2nd-3rd orders to:Audi 80 GTE vs BMW 320 vs Saab 99 EMS (June '76)Renault 5 GTL vs Opel Kadett City vs VW Golf 1100 (June '76)VW Passat LS vs Maxi 1750HL vs Renault 20TL (November '76)Mercedes-Benz 240D vs Citroen CX 2200D vs Peugeot 504GLD (May '77)Place your bets now! There are other Giant Tests in these issues, but the results are much more predictable than the above.
Guest Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Trig, can you post up the 'Edinburgh on a Monkey' article? Also, the one where they enter the 18 in the banger race at Wisbech? I think it might have been in the October 1991 issue, and as I recall, Fraser managed half a lap before the 18 got pounced on and trashed.Don't know what class he ran in though, because the grid was full of A60s and Triumph 2000s. Surely they're a: older (in the A60's case, pre 1968) and b: have a larger engine? Unless it was a DD or something - I thought Spedeworth ran it according to engine size. It doesn't say what engine the 18 had it it.
trigger Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I read the 'Edinburgh on a Monkey' article today at work, Really good, I would love to try somethink like that with a few mates for a laugh but i think it's be to easy now what with the Internet and mobile phones.I'm scanning it up now, I'll have a look for the banger race one in a bit.

trigger Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I should really read through what I've written before i press submit, One of the downfalls of dyslexia!
Guest Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I should really read through what I've written before i press submit, One of the downfalls of dyslexia! ?Ah, 'somethink' ? No bother, I had no idea lad, you should read what our idiotic comms rep leaves up on the monitors for us at work. Gems like:'Bring wht youve brought over to the sofa's'Fully dressed with the client's logo and banner on it. On a corporate visit. Respect.
trigger Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 I've found the banger racing issues as well, I might do a new thread for that if you want as there quite a few pages of it. Piece of 2x1 to hold seat back inplace FTW!
Mr Lobster Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Brilliant, thanks for scanning! Strange to think that the cars were only 11 years old at the time but were very clearly on their last legs. Plus, Brett Fraser passed up a Mk2 Escort for £500. Bet that wouldn't happen now
FredTransit Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Clearly the producer of Top Gear read this.....
Spottedlaurel Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 It was one of the most memorable articles of my magazine-reading days. Amazing how difficult it was to find a £500 car nearly 20 years ago!
pogweasel Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Hey, I remember reading this article now!Class.
Guest Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 Brilliant, thanks for scanning! Strange to think that the cars were only 11 years old at the time but were very clearly on their last legs. Plus, Brett Fraser passed up a Mk2 Escort for £500. Bet that wouldn't happen now I know, there's clearly been some development making newer cars last longer. Before they're killed by the Scrappage Scheme. How strange a thing time is. I was 7 when that article was written. Clearly cars weren't made to last to the same degree. I know for a fact that £500 waved in Hirst's direction would get me a car that would get me to Edinburgh and back. In 1990, cars at that price could be suffering from any of a number of maladies. Nowadays it's normally electronics that write a car off, rather than bodywork, although an 11 or 12 year Ford would be crusty by now. Seems as if Fraser \ Bremner had some degree of mechanical skill as well - in the very least they can both accurately diagnose faults. The dealers seemed keen to fix faults with some alacrity if it resulted in a sale too - witness the Toyota 'Liftback' with a faulty We know what happens to Fraser's 18 (by the sound of things, he ended up keeping it after the race had finished and banger raced it because it couldn't be sold on), but what of the Tangerine Scream? Does anyone else want a 14 after reading that article? Orange 14, or a GS? The latter would definitely be more valuable. Thing is, I don't think I've ever seen a 14 for real, even at a car show. Going off Renault's nomenclature, were they about the size of an Escort?
trigger Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 The R14 wasn't taxed after September 1990 so i guess once the tax ran out they scrapped it. I can't ever remember seeing one on the road neither, and i lived opposite a Renault main dealer for 10 years (O.k i was 10 when i moved from there but i still can't remember seeing one). I have also found a road test in a 1991 issue of CAR where they test the Jag XJS against a E-type, A Audi 100 against a NSU RO80, A Citroen ZX against a GS and a Alfa Romeo 33 4wd against a Alfasud to see what improvements have been made over 20 years. I might scan that tomorrow and post it up here. Oh and the Renault 18 banger challenge is now here http://www.flickr.com/photos/triggersca ... 621278480/ You need to be logged on it Flickr and click all sizes to view it at a readable size.

trigger Posted October 19, 2009 Posted October 19, 2009 That's the one!, Although the condition of your one resembles my old porn collection...

Going off Renault's nomenclature, were they about the size of an Escort?I used to get a lift home from school in the 80's from a family with an R14. Also used to get a lift off a different family with a Fuego. Happy days!
