Stop it Dave! You're not helping. I might have a 130 on the way...By the way - you had me worried for a minute. With that title, I thought you'd gone all new-fangled and front-wheel drive!

Great pictures but this sequence

is just heroic. Well done, they all look great.

Love 'em. Had a few too. Mind you, this was back when they were £50 cars. Certainly wouldn't bugger them up now like I used to!

Never finished this one. Shocking to think it was an 18,000 mile car at the time too :roll: The running gear did end up in the Bounced Czech though...

And my favourite

This ended up with a very sorted Guy Croft 2.1 litre Lancia twin-cam in the boot. It was a hoot, and I have never since had a car that would accelerate off the lights as quickly as this! I sold it to guy who was going to hill climb it. I saw photos of a nut and bolt restoration in progress a year or so later, then he and the car disappeared. I hope it still exists, as I know series 1 coupes are bloody rare. According to the DVLA, it has not been on the road since I sold it in '97.

:D Glad you enjoyed the pics, most people don't understand my obsession!

Cheers Dave & SS!!!!I do loves a good rear-engined czech. They really are a good craic. Easy to work on, easy to upgrade, what's not to like!?My first car was a 120LS of 1984 vintage, finished in a fetching shade of 'carrot chunks in puke', a marvellous weapon. Simply substitute the shitty standard carb for a weber, and the pooey exhaust for an ashley item and you have an instant traffic-light-grand-prix-winner. I've owned 4 in total now, one of which was ex-DaveRapid stock. Really ought to think about sourcing another soon!

Thanks for the lovely Skoda stream! 8)

Love these two! Original & best...

1 thing that confuses me about these....were the later ones just called Estelle or only in certain markets or what? I was under the impression these earlier ones just had number identifiers?! Like 105L, 120L etc

Posted

How much are Estelles like these nowadays?

Posted Image

Talking one in decent condition, good mechanicals and a bit of test.

Just curious really, I've fancied one for a bit but I suspect they're out of my reach.

More than at any time since they drove off the forecourt.

My father-in-law has been "into" Skodas since the early 80's. He's even more complimentary about Estelles than the Datsun 510s he used as a policeman in Kenya in the early 70s, and subsequently sold for the Mombasa main agent once he left the force. The Fabia they have now will probably be the last Skoda they ever own, though. Quite frankly it's an unreliable crudheap, and the 1.4 MPI just ain't suited to a modern car.Recently I unearthed a number of Skoda Owners Club magazines from the early 90s from their loft, made for compelling reading. Many articles by that "Czechered Flag" chap that posts on R-R.

Do they have a strong following then? I thought they were an acquired taste like Allegros, that despite the passage of time, are still, at the end of the day an Allegro & maintain the same sort of image problem! :?

Still can be had for peanuts, but they are attracting a following now for sure. Well, I hope they can be had for peanuts - I might find out soon...The jokes do seem to be wearing off at last...

Wonderful post. I had some of those Skoda Brochures from the 1989 Motorshow. Drove a Rapid once and apart from the long gearchange loved every minute of it! Lots of affection for those things here!

That reminds me. Back in the mid 90's, I was at University with a chap who owned a white, F-reg Rapid. He told me the original engine had been replaced with a 1300 Beetle unit. Don't know if that was possible, or indeed a popular swap. All I know is it idled at 2500rpm for some reason.

What would be the point of that, unless with the forethought that it might one day appear on a 'shite engine swaps' thread on a forum on the internet...

The Estelle range as we know it was only called Estelle in the UK. Everywhere else it was called 105, 105S, 120L, 130LSE ect ect according to engine size and trim level. The guy in Shoreham is perhaps more obsessed than me, you can see the back end of him in one of the pics I posted! One of his cars is the gorgeous modified black Rapid in the pics.Apart from not having a water cooling system to worry about I really don't understand the point of fitting a Beetle engine...I have nothing against Beetles but their engines are definately not faster, quieter or more efficient than Skoda ones!

Posted

The skoda engines of the Estelle is used in the VW Lupo until 2005

Posted

And in the Fabia until about 2003, too - until the 3-cylinder 1.2 units replaced it. I'm sure a good one is a fine unit, but it's slow in the heavy (1200kg!) Fabia, rough, and not that economical.

Ford x-flow motors are pretty much a straight fit in an old Skoda, chap who built a few engines for me had a white, 'C' plate Estelle with a 170odd bhp x-flow that was snorty as fuck. Twin 45 Dell'orto carbs etc. That thing was mentally quick. Confused the fuck out of the boy racers in Wigan for a good few years, that old Skoda.
