No, the X350 uses a ZF 6 speed, the X308 a ZF 5 speed and the X300 uses the seemingly indestructible ZF 4 speed (but different variants between 3.2 and 4.0 litre). XJRs as mentioned used stronger gearboxes (except the X350 which uses the same gearbox in all configurations). In the X308 it was indeed the Mercedes Benz 5G tronic. In the X306 it was a GM 4L80 box used in a great many things from Rolls Royce, Bentley, Hummer H1, AM DB7, V8 pickup trucks, earth movers probably..

However the unknown stereo with no RDS had to be sacked off. The windscreen DAB aerial was calling me. Had a look in Halfords today and in amongst their depleted display was a mechless Pioneer for 80 quid. However after enquiring, they had none in stock, but brought out a boxed ex-display Kenwood KBC-BT720DAB, the one with superfluous CD player. "£69". Sod it, I'll take it.
